is there a way to add factory cab lights to my 350? something like a factory harness in the dash for the lights thats just not used if you dont have them. if not, is there a way to wire them up without overloading the wiring?
Yes you can add the factory clearance lights even if your truck didn't come with them from the factory. I'm sure somebody in the forum will be kind enough to post the ford part numbers for all the bits you will need. Or you can check ebay or maybe a junk (I mean salvage) yard.
I bought that kit off ebay for 90$ and installed them with help from a buddy, to be honest with you guys me and kris looked and couldn't find the wire behind the kick panel so we ended up just wiring them into my running lights, right into the switch...

Thats it what i think iam going to have to do. I have an excursion and dont think the plug is there,
Nick
I believe the plug is always there, it just might already have something else plugged into it. I think that the overhead console, or map lights use the same plug. If you have the overhead console or map lights I think you can get a different wiring harness that plugs into both them and the cab lights.
Beerstalker is right. If you have the overhead console, it's plugged into the socket that the clearance lights use. Ford has a seperate harness that addresses this issue for an extra $60-$80 (I don't remember the exact price), but from what I'm told, it's easy to just tap into the overhead console harness.
When you talk about the inner hole and the outer hole is there a template that comes with anything or did you make the template off the back of one of the lights?
i didn't want to spend the extra money when all I had to do was flip the harness around ground the one wire and tap into the brown one behind the switch....mine was suppose to come with a template but didn't (down side to ebay) but i measured off a friends truck but made a few changes, the lights next the the middle light i moved to the outside a little..i love the look
Why does everyone always take the hit on e-bay for $90 to $120 when you can go to the dealer and pay $78 for the lamps and harness? Are you all that afraid of the Ford parts dept.
so it sounds like i can do it all for under a bill. does the new harness include the suroof too? also, what about the smoked recon lights. are they just the lanse or the whole housing? my truck is the sandstone met. and the smoked lights would look great. IMO.
The recon smoked clearance lights come with the lenses and the bulbs. Pricey, but I just ordered a set for my truck because I like the smoked look better than the orange. I bought the kit off ebay because our dealers in Canada want about $225 for the clearance lights and harness up here. Parts are much cheaper in the USA. Dealers up here are ripping us off on parts costs right now considering the dollar is at par.
$78.28 for 5 lamp assemblies and the harness at the local dealer. They had the lamps in stock and got the harness overnight from a dealer in Portland.
There are two differant harnesses, one is for trucks with the overhead console and vanity mirrors. The other is for trucks w/o.
LAMP ASSEMBLY = F812-15442-AA (will need 5)
WIRE HARNESS = 1C32-15A404-AA (need 1) this is the # for w/o overhead console and will work. I have some pics somewhere on how to do it, probabably easier just to get the right harness (plug and play) but I would have had to wait longer to get it.
Will also need 10 5mm nylock nuts and flat washers or 1/8 X 3/4 fender washers with the hole drilled to fit the studs on the lamp.
