[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 10:28 PM (EST)]1.How can one move the peak of the torque curve LOWER on the charts??
2.Can it be accomplished by advancing the cam timing?
3.And how would one do this on the 300 six? An offset key for the cam gear or is it even possible??
4.Where would one get the parts?
5.would it effect mileage much?
I would like to lower the power band about 400-500 RPM's on the torque curve if it is possible ..
An offset key could be used or an adjustable timing gearset (available from Cloyes.) 4 degrees of advance from it's present retarded position should do the job, but you need to degree in your existing cam first to find out where you really are.
There's 2 possible problems with doing this:
1) It will almost surely screw up your emissions and may cause internal problems with your EFI system resulting in error codes
2) if you have an anti-knock sensor, the Cloyes gearset may set it off since it's all metal and to (the sensor at least) considerably noisier than the stock phenolic set. If you do this please post results, there are seveal people interested in the outcome.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 10:31 PM (EST)]I was wondering about the emissions, And what the stock computer would do.
I am going to look into the cost of a offset key, That and a gasket set (And some spare time) would be very cheap expirement
why do you want to get your torque curve that low? Mine is at 800-900rpm, and more than useable. If I need to go slow, I pop it into 4low, with the hubs unlocked. Unless you plan on pulling your house over while you sit and watch, I can't think of any reason for it.
My truck is EFI and the peak of the torque curve seems to be from 1800-2400 RPM, I would like to see it down around 1300-1800 RPM.
It is not 4WD so I have no low range. It has a bulldog 1st gear. So it will already pull anything from a dead stop that I need to.
I was hoping to get a little more UMMMPH in the 1300-1800 rpm range, I am willing to give up everything above 2600-2800 RPM because I never go there!!!
I was just wondering what will occur when I advance the cam 4 Degrees as suggested??::
1. Where to get the parts?
2. What effects on the Computer and the emissions?
3. Will the Computer be able to function at all??
My 300 I6 is EFI and over the carbed ones I have owned I notice the EFI is a little sluggish below 2000 RPM and then at 2000 there is a power surge and it really flys, but there seems to be adequate torque below that. Now, if you want to make this engine more tractor like, why not do it right and get a different camshaft tailored for low rpm grunt--perhaps an RV cam. Someone on this site will have good advice on that. Maybe a new post, "What camshaft for more bottom end torque?" would get the results.

AFAIK all 300 cams have the same or very nearly the same specs but are indexed differently. The oldest carbed cams are "straight up" the newest EFI cams are "severely retarded" just like the tree-huggers that inspired them. An 89 is going to be somewhere in between and might be worth experimenting with.
Actually, all of the cams since the late 70's were retarded, and when the OBDII engines cam out, they went back to straight-up. What actually was retarded was the gears, not the cam itself. On fordsix.com, there is a forum where this guy developed a better adjustable timing gear set for the 300-6. (let me know if the name of the site was blocked, I will e-mail it to you.)
