My first question would be what do they call affordable / Low cost?
My first thought would be, wouldn't you run into a serious problem if the motor overheated just a bit, as in, wouldn't those bearings lock up easily? They would have to be made of something that wouldn't expand under heat, because you would need tight clearances so you wouldn't get blow by, around the bearings, right?
I would have to see it operate and see the benefits, on hp and tq as well as fuel economy compared to a flat tappet equivalent, before I thought it was the latest and greatest invention.
Coates Engines have had generator sets in the fields for a few years now..
The bearings on both ends are lubed by engine oil, The spheres themselves are oilless...
Do some searching on thier site and you can see the advantages and disadvantages. They already have thier own Motorcycle equipped with this technology.
The system moves MUCH MUCH more than even a ported head can!!!!
Like anything new, It will take a while to perfect it, And maybe longer before the general public can swallow it.
The Tucker automobile had Disc Brakes and Seat belts in the 50's!!!
Well you brought up a good point, if in fact they do flow better. I guess the question is who would benefit from this setup? When you talk about high flow, I think racing motors. So I would say as far as, joe noboby driving a street motor the old pushrods would be best, unless they have an endless pocket and interest in something different.
How could this setup be cheaper than an overhead set up, which consists of cams and pushrods vs. a one off rotary system?
It is interesting though, wonder what sparked the original concept?
I was wrong about the bearings being oiled, They are oilless too!
Ceramic seals for the rotating spheres are oilless too.
Heat would have to kill it quickly...
There are links to some good videos on thier website..
