finally cranked
got down to it and checked the timing gears. dots were way off; even though everything up top (TDC, etc) was lined up. inspected gears viually - seemed cool, reassembled all, and vroom! - started right up. Shouldn't there have been some type of audible or visual indication of these things being out of whack? Also, what would cause this to happen? Thanks
