well, i was under the truck greasing the front end and all of its associated pieces and decided to do a quick little visual of the rear end. upon checking out the driver side rear spring shackle, the hanger is broken! how much is this piece to replace? ive put a picture of the said culprit in my gallery. thanks for any and all help.
they are pretty cheap. like 40 or so then some grade 8 bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts. drill a drain hole in the bottom of the new one when you do it.
nice. go to lmc truck parts . com and they have them, pretty cheap. under coat them before install and drill the hole as tim said, they arent too bad to do
im planning on doing both, the other one isnt bad, but its ugly and rusted. this will all be a good time to get under there with some nice black rustoleum and paint the whole undercarriage up! like tim's sig says, broken parts are nothing more than excuses for upgrades.
Yep, not too bad if you have a torch, and the bolts that TJ mentioned. I used an offset box wrench and a little tape to get them between the fuel tank and frame. You'll see. The spring bushing bolt may give you trouble too.
hmmmm....guess im bringing home the grinding wheel from work! fun fun fun. havent really looked at whats on the other side of the frame rail, is there enough room to grind the heads off from the outside and pop them in with a punch and hammer?
yep rivets. I torch the heads off then knock them out with an air hammer. Drilling them is another option. a chisel and a hammer won't work so if you don't have a torch then get a good sharp drill bit. or beg, borrow or steal (not recommended!) a torch.
hahaha, i have access to a torch, too. ill grind the heads off, heat the rest of it a little bit, hoping to make it easier to knock the remainder of the rivet out. theoretically, that should work! im assuming i will have to jack up the back end to decompress the suspension, support the axle, and take off the rear hanger, then replace?? i know im probably making it sound alot easier than it is, but a man's gotta dream! thanks again for all your help, guys.
