not a dumb question, i didnt know the answer until i asked, either. single shot injectors, as in those on the 49-state OBS powerstrokes, fire a single shot of fuel per combustion cycle. in the cali OBS and all NBS powerstrokes, split-shot injectors were used. per combustion cycle, they fired a small "pilot shot" before the main shot of fuel. from what i understand of this, the pilot shot raises the cylinder temps to make the main shot combust more efficiently. this was mainly an emissions thing. the bottom line is that the single shots generally have the ability to make more power than the split shots. many of the guys with split shots upgrade to single shot injectors when they go aftermarket, especially bigger injectors. hope this helps.
and you get better milage with single shots because of only using one shot of fuel not 2... now commonrail systems get just plain confusing... up to like 9 shots per combustion cycle...
TJ: Thank you for that artical it is Super. Not only did I bookmark it but I printed it out for faster referance.
A thread of sorts to store this type of info along with other mods, I would think would be very helpful to other new members as well as the "Oldies" for referance. This type of thread would be "Read Only" which would eliminate all of the other comments that generally go along with a question and/or statement.
Thanks again.
