Question External Transmission Filter

Does my 2005 have an external tranny filter? I have the torqshift transmission. If so how often do you recommend changing it? And is there another filter inside the pan?

yes there is only an external by the right frame rail in the front o fht truck and not one in the pan just a pickup is all. I would say every 30K when you shoudl flush it as well...don't forget the transfer case too.

there is one in the pan also, not just a pick up. Ford says no need to change the one in the pann but I say I feel better to change it.

What's the best way to go about flushing the tranny, is it something I can do myself, or would it be better to go to a quickie lube style place, or a dealer?

The process is in the workshop manual, however it is a bit involved. if you do have someone else do it, take it to the dealer. I wouldn't trust a quikie lube joint to put in the correct and required fluid.

If you are interested, the ext. filter # is Motorcraft ft-145. Book says change every 15,000 miles. Do every 10,000 if towing, my opinion only. The only fluid to be used in the torqueshift tranny is Mercon SP, no substitutes if you value your tranny. SP is only available thru Ford.
