I have a 08 450 that has the external filter on the transmission. I'm wondering I could update my truck so it has the internal filter. My reason is the cost of a transmission flush and cost of this filter. Maybe it's not worth it.
Other forum site and a thread where someone did what you are thinking about; with links in the thread too.
There is a thread on this site (right here on FTE!) where someone says the new 2011 six speed went back to the external filter because the internal filter could not flow enough for the new six speed. The external filter is not 'full flow' but a bypass that filters 10% IIRC. The job 2 2008 internal filter only is a high effiency full flow (but perhaps it doesn't flow enough for the new 2011 six speed?)
Search on "transmission external" or "transmission pan" on this site in 6.4 or on the site at the link above for more information. There is a former Ford transmission engineer with many posts on the other site. Note the fluid specifications or useage changed too for our trucks.
Good luck with whatever your decision is.

Reason: clarify 'this site'
I do not understand why you would want to do this? It is not a cheap filter, but it does not get changed often anyway. I actually just bought one from amazon like someone mentioned here. Cheaper then my wholesale cost at the dealer. I actually tried changing it today, got everything off but the 2 quick connect fitting. They sent me the wrong size disconnect parts!!!
