9" axle identification

I am wondering what I've got under the back end of my '56. Without having a tag on the rear end is it possible to know what I have? Mostly I would like to know if it's got 28 or 31 splines. I guess I should roll back under it and check if there is an ID tag too. I just don't want to go out into the garage right now, I'm lazy that way.

If there's no tag, you can ID it by the dimples, ribs, axle tube size, bearing size, etc... Here's a link you can read during yer laziness, lol.

If you have a 9 inch in a 1956 it was swapped in. What fits is the 1957/72 F100 9's, the 1973 and later 9's are wider. The car 9's are too narrow.

In 1968, Ford introduced the 31 splined axles for the first time. It was an option except on the 390 V8 F100 Camper Specials.

If the tag is still there, it will be on one of the 10 bolts that hold the carrier (pumpkin) to the housing. The original location was between 4 and 5 o'clock.

Thanks guys! That is one heck of a site. Makes me want to ditch out of work early and go check my truck out right now. I was chipping the Oklahoma concrete/dry mud off of the axle housing a couple of weeks ago, but haven't gotten up to above the yoke to find if the "N" is there and whether or not the tag is still around. Next question though would be is it normal to have lube oil coming out from around the pinion shaft? At first I thought it was old transmission fluid weeping out of the OK concrete, but it isn't red and has that great rear end oil flavor. I expected it to be from the seal back at the housing.
