ok boys, i've got a question,
The 427-Side-Oiler, why is it so special? I got how they have the path on the left side of the block, my dad don't understand it neither do I and he has never even heard about it. I was wondeing if anyone could give my some info on it and how and why it is so special? And why its called the side-oiler?
Thanks,
Nick

Nick, most FE Fords, and even some 427s, have a center, or top oil gallery, like most detroit V8s. These engines feed the oil to the cam bearings before anything else. When Ford was having durability issues with their nascar engines in the early sixties, they first added crossbolts to the block skirts, and then designed a new block with the main oil gallery down the side of the block, oiling the mains first, hence the sideoiler designation. They were made from 65 to 70 if memory serves me correctly. The one I've got is a 68 that has additional oil gallerys to allow the use of hydralic lifters, most 427s are setup for solids, some of them have the gallery for side oiling and hydralic lifters, but they aren't drilled. Ford sold blocks to industrial users, ChrisCraft marine, and lots of others, you never know what version you might see. Any 427 block is usually exspensive, but they are sought after because they allow you to build the biggest displacement FE. DF

The 427 side oiler was produced from '65 thru '67(maybe some in '68). It differs from all other FE's mainly because it oils the main bearings from a passage in the side of the block. Straight from the oilpump/filter to the mains. All other FE's oil the mains through the upper center oil galley and it comes down through the cam bearings 1st. Before the mains can oil, the cam has to oil. Kinda backwards from what seems to me to make good common sense. If you can find a diagram showing the oil flow of each, it becomes very clear why the side oiler is so well known and in such demand.

To say a sideoiler oils the mains first is kind of misleading. Check out the oil paths @
[link:members.nbci.com/brat360/FE_oiling1.jpg|FE oiling pic] This shows the different oil passages (top left for sideoiler) and where to plug to run solid lifters. I guess a more accurate description is the sideoiler dumps the oil between the main and cam bearings so it can flow to the mains without having to squeeze by the cam bearings. The flow would go easier to the cam bearings than having to turn back to the mains. In any case it's a vast improvement over the top oiler unless you can cute the grooves behind the cam bearings bigger.

the side oiler can be easily identified from outside the block by the three small screw in plugs just above the crossbolts on the left side of the block.
