Finally tested GPs, results
Gave removing the wiring harnasses on the valve covers another shto today, said forget being gentle, and finally got them off. Ohmed them and here are the results:
Pass. Side Driver Side
ohms= 0, 48.3 Rear of truck
ohms= 0, 0
ohms= 0, 2.5
ohms= 60.9, 2.3 Front of truck
Numbers on the left are from the pass. side, drivers side on right.
What's the deal with the gps reading 0? Possible loose connections to glow plugs? I tried many differant grounds, and got the same readings. Accordign to my interpretation of the results, all of my glow plugs that produced readings are bad, am I right? If I do end up replacing glow plugs, should I just do them all with 171,000 on the truck? After testing, truck started hard, 60 degrees out, and had been sitting for 14 hours.

When I ohm out glow plugs I use the negative post on the battery. It definetly looks like all your glow plugs are bad. If you still have starting problems after you change the glow plugs I would change the GPR even if it checks good. I had a friend whose glow plugs were as bad as your, changed the glow plugs and still had cold starting problems. GPR checked good. Went ahead and changed the GPR and the cold starting problem was fixed. The only thing we could figure was the GPR was not allowing enough amps to the glow plugs because the bad glow plugs burned the contacts or something.

Not sure. I can say it is a PITA getting my probes to touch just the one pin. I would not expect zero on any of them because they work via resistance and with no resistance then there is no glow. Especially at that mileage on those. As for the others, may be bad or you might have tested something else with a bad connection. This procedure gave me fits. What setting did you use on the meter?

I also agree with Tenn... it is not easy getting the probe on the pins to test. But i did have a high reading and a few ones i'm not sure along with a few 0's.. the high reading explains my miss when it does fire. But I ordered 8 and will be changed them all as i don't want to pull the covers fix 3 or so of them and 3 months when its 10 deg outside be doing the other 5. I got the motorcraft zd-11's from ebay for 54.00 shipped for 8. This is tomorrow's project.

I triple checked all of my readings with different ground too, used the battery ground and made sure to only touch one pin at a time. My multi-meter only has one setting for ohms, as it does the range automatically, and has given good results in the past. What would the glow plug wires read if they were unplugged from the glow plugs, just the wire essentially on the other end of the pin? I am planning on replacing all 8 if the valve covers come off, especially with 171,000 miles on the engine.

Well, with no continuity I believe they read infinity. I had to play with my range to get what I wanted because I am no electrician. It should not give a zero if there is no continuity. If your range is out, it can read zero when indeed it may be above that but below sensitivity. What kind of meter was it?
Again, I am no electrical guru.

Well, crap, I thought I had it handy but do not. I believe Kwikk posted that the rocker arm pedestals are 20lbsft, but I cannot find the injector value which I am sure is an inch pound rating. Look here for the rocker tq post.
I will find the injector #s for you here shortly hopefully, if someone else does not chime in. My shop manual is in my laptop, AGAIN.

To help me check the glow plug since it can be pain to touch the probe on the pins, instead of paying $80 plus for the test harness Ford lists, I went to this website http://www.source-products.com/public_html/index.html and bought a replacent harness that had the wires attached to the plug. It mad it easier to ohm the GP. I eventual hooked it up to a breakout box, which made it really nice.
