What the hell was wrong with Ford when they put this oil pan in. My 10 year old woul find a better place for the drain plug to go. Not only is it difficult to access to remove but it also leaks directly on the cross member making a mess to drip everywhere. Is there not a cleaner solution to this issue?
I had the same problem with my 79 f100 and 351m engine. I think someone had swapped the engine at sometime and put in one with a front oil pump sump instead of a rear one. I felt better thinking that than believing some high dollar engineer at Ford that never changed his own oil had thought that was a fine design!
They do have the quick change oil drain line kits you can buy made by Fram. They replace the drain plug with a quick disconnect fitting that you slide and lock an oil tube into that extends it to possibly clear the crossmember. First that is the best spot for the plug because you need the oil to drain and if it was anywere else it wouldnt work. as for the leaking the problem there is the leaking not where it leaks to, fix the leak and you wont have a problem. as for getting to it i change my own oil and have never had a hard time getting to the drain plug. lastly if that is your biggest problem with your truck i would be sooooo happy
Tell me about it! Right now I am trying to remove the pan on the 68 to replace the pump. There is just too many things to get hungup on!!! to help you out on your question, you can install a replacement plug which has a hose attached to it so it will clear the cross-member and drain directly into the catch pan. I believe you can get one at Autozone or the dreaded Craigans. If you have some time try ordering it through a parts mag. At least that route will get you the right pitch on the replacement plug. Good luck!
On my 390 rebuild, I had my buddy weld a new bung on the pan, and used a large (3/4") fine thread bolt to screw in. This is a 9 qt pan, and it drains quite nicely, not getting a drop anywhere but the drain bucket.
