If I do a drain and fill, is there a plug on the torque converter like on the older Fords??

I can't remember when Ford stopped putting a plug on the TC, but I'm pretty sure your '03 doesn't have one.

If your looking to do a complete flush and refill, you know about Mark K's write-up, right?

Ya, I ready the write up already. But I was going to change to Royal Purple, and wanted to drain everything, blow out the cooler and put a new filter in the pan, and add a external filter.

I was really hoping there was a drain.

The last torque converter drain plug was installed in August, 2001.

The procedure referenced above will change more fluid than if you could drain the pan, torque converter, and blew out the lines. Why don't you want to use it?

I thought it would take a lot more fluid that way to change it over to as close to 100% as I could get.

As of now it has 109,000 miles on it, and as far as I know it's never been changed. I figured I'd put full synthetic in it to make the trans last longer.

So your sayin, with the flush method described, I'd be better off anyways?

Figure 5 gallons is enough?

I recommend reading the whole procedure before starting. It calls for 20 quarts, or 5 gallons.

I'll have to reread it again, it's been a wile.

I was just thinking might take a bit more when flushing with the same oil that's in there vs changing the type to get a total change due to some old oil staying behind b

On my 2000 I have a TC drain but if you use Mark's procedure for the complete flush using the return lines you don't need it, I flushed mine using his write up and never pulled that plug, just the pan, change filter, replace, open lines and flush. Used 19 and 1/2 quarts of fluid and got a transmission facial and shower to boot!

Well no one told me (until after) that the filter was going to still be full of fluid even after sitting for an hour. Pulled it out and got a face full. Then got the shower with the return line because the bolt had some rust and got it out about 4 turns and it got stuck. Took 19 quarts out but only 17 went in the bucket the rest went on me and the garage floor. In fact the clothes I had on that day were thrown in the trash and took about 6 attempts to get the fluid out of my hair. But will take nasty tranny fluid anyday over gear oil so that's the good side of the story -at least it wasn't gear oil.

So you can imagine what it was like for me when I r&r'd auto trans as a job when I was a kid. Funny thing is; we never paid attention to which way the drives-shafts went back in which leads me to believe that was another myth. Now it's; "oh, don't forget to mark it!".

That is a myth. The shafts are balanced off the vehicle, so it doesn't matter what way they go.
