Casting Numbers for engine ID

I have a 72 F100. The engine that is in it probably is not the original. When I bought it the guy said it was a 390, VIN says its a 360. I measured it and its stroke is 3.5 inches which makes it a 360. The casting numbers on the intake are D3TE9425AM and on the block (these are hard to read) they are D space 25 and then what looks like an A. The block numbers are from behind the alternator. Barry suggested getting the head and exhaust manifold numbers also, which I will do this week end. The carb is off a 390 according to its tag, so this make me think that the engine is a replacement.

Also I heard somewhere about the FE and FT engines can someone tell me what they are?

Thanks,
Bob

FE stands for "Ford Engine." The FE series of engines are big block V8s produced from the late 50s to the mid-70s (1976, I think). They were used in cars and light duty trucks. FT stands for "Ford Truck." FT engines are similar to FE engines but are built for heavy duty commercial use. The FT engines came in things like F600 and F700 commercial trucks.

You likely have either a 352 or 360 FE. The 352 was available in various cars and trucks from 1958 to 1966. The 360 was available only in Ford light trucks, where it was quite common, from 1967 to the mid-70s. Both utilize the same crankshaft with a 3.5" stroke. The 352 has a 4.00" bore, and the 360 has a 4.05" bore. The most common FE's are the 390, which has the 4.05" bore with a longer 3.78" stroke, and the 428, which combines a 4.13" bore with a 3.98" stroke.

The FT motors had heavier castings, very restrictive heads designed for low rpm and high torque, and forged steel crankshafts. The cranks won't interchange with FE cranks, however. FT's came in 330, 359, 361, 389 and 391 cubic inches, though the 361 and 391 seem to have been the most common.

I just looked at your post again. The intake casting number indicates it's a 1973 or later piece. Given that the VIN code is for a 360, and that you measured a 3.5" stroke, you almost certainly have a 360 cid FE. Welcome to the club. The carb and intake were probably later replacements from a slightly more recent 390 motor. They would bolt on to a 360 with no problem.

I checked the numbers on the heads and this is what there is C8AEH and the number under the oil filter adapter is D15.

C8AE-H heads were used on 1968 360, 390 and 428 ci engines with "thermactor" emission control provisions. They had 67-70 cc combustion chambers, standard 2.02" intake and 1.55" exhaust valves, 2.34" x 1.34" exhaust ports, and 1.84" x 1.34" intake ports.

You've certainly got a mutt of an engine. This much appears certain -- you have a 65-76 FE block with a 352/360 crankshaft (3.5" stroke), onto which someone has bolted the heads from a 1968 360/390/428, and an intake manifold from a 73+. It is roughly 360-370 cid depending on whether it was previously overbored and by how much. The easiest way to improve it would be to stroke it with a 390 or 428 crank.
