casting block numbers

Where do you find the casting block numbers on the fe motors? What I thought was a 390 in my 75 ford f-100 turns out to have a manifold and carb off a 1966 high performance motor (427 or 390). I found out when I went to change the thermostat and it didnt match up to anything in any parts store. Finally found one at Carls ford parts in Ohio. Problem is I dont know if they swapped the whole motor out for the 427 high performance or just the manifold and carb onto to the Y code 360 motor the truck came out with. I cant find the casting numbers on the block anywhere except for the DIF number for the block which doesnt tell me what motor it is. Does anyone know where the casting number should be on the block?

Most all FE's have "352" or a reverse "501" cast into the front of the block but that's not going to tell you anything other than it's a FE, you have to measure the stroke and if need be the bore as well, if it's a 427 it should (though not always) have cross bolted main caps. <TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=1 borderColor=#000000 width=98 bg*************** align=right><TBODY><TR><TD>352</TD><TD rowSpan=2 align=middle>3.50"</TD></TR><TR><TD>360</TD></TR><TR><TD>390</TD><TD rowSpan=3 align=middle>3.78"</TD></TR><TR><TD>406</TD></TR><TR><TD>427</TD></TR><TR><TD>410</TD><TD rowSpan=2 align=middle>3.98"</TD></TR><TR><TD>428</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
