I helped my buddys mom move a while back and she gave me some stuff that she didnt want. One of the things she gave me was a fairly large camera lens thing. Its about 7" long and 2.5" wide. Its a vivitar and it looks like its from the 80s-early 90s. I have no use for it and i want to sell it. How do i go about finding the value of it? Its got a nice carrying case and appears to be in perfect condition. If you need more info on it just ask. Any help is appreciated.
I'm sure there are many online camera stores or even some local camera stores you could check but I'm guessing that it doesn't have too much value.
I have a great Konica 35mm SLR setup with zoom lenses up the wazoo and it takes incredible pictures. But, since 35mm cameras got up into the 5, 7 and 10 megapixel range and now come in SLR style, the 35mm film camera went in the closet. Can't beat knowing instantly how the shot came out.
I think most pro photogs have gone digital as well.
Try ebay and see what the demand/selling price is.
Put it on E-Bay with a 10 day listing and start at $9.95. That will help determine the price. I think this is probably only worth $10 anyways.
There are many different kind of mounts (C mount etc.). Search on E-Bay by OEM first. See if it does not come apart into two separate lens. Many times one lens mounts (screws) into another.
Post some pics, and let's see what you've got, I6power!!!
2-1/2" in diameter by 7" long?? Definitely sounds like a zoom lens, or, a fixed 'long focal length'.
My daughter is in photography class, and needs a 35 mm camera for that class.
I offered to her, my Canon AE-1 and all the lenses.
She says that she doesn't want a dinosaur. She wants a camera that'll do everything for her.
I can't figure out kids. (Especially MY kids!) They want to learn something, but, they want everything done for them.

Hopefully she will come to her senses and learn that automatic everything will give you boring, generic pictures. I am always experimenting with shutter speed and the F-stop to try to enhance a photo.....even when using the digital camera. Some of my best shots have been when I control the settings, not the camera.
So, what's the point of taking a photography class?
IMO, the AE-1 is capable of doing far more than it should need to for someone learning photography. A fully manual camera would force her to actually learn something.
Maybe they're only using digital cameras in the class?? Her instructor should provide guidlines for choosing a camera.

My daughter's instructor let them use her 'fully auto' 35mm last year.
This year, the instructor wants to see the camera(s) that each student wants to use.
I don't understand it.
My daughter takes some beautifully composed photos. She has a 'good eye', but, I agree, she won't learn squat if the camera does it all.
No digital allowed in class. B/W film. Color film.
She made a pinhole camera last year.
I brought out a box of old photos and she said that I 'bought' some of the photos that I took. (Such as photos of the moon, fireworks, etc.)

alright sounds like a 35mm telephoto lens of some sort, maybe zoom..?
check www.keh.com and search everything you know about it there. they have an online estimater and such like that, whatever it says, figure on getting alittle more if you sell it private party.
