Bought a early(?)352 rebuilt to put in my 66 4x4 f100 ,My original 352 has motor mount holes (unused) next to freeze out plugs and another set spaced a little wider apart which are the ones used, This new ,(older) engine only has the holes by the freeze out plugs,My mounts cant bolt on!!! What mounts do I use,and how early is this FE ? It also has what appears to be a big vacuum port in back of the intake HELP!!!! FATZ
never seen this before on a truck, sure this did not come out of an early ford car? I think if you have too use the mounting holes around the freeze plug, this will change the position of the motor about two inches. Might create driveline problems.
If you are real creative, you could try drilling and tapping the proper holes, I would; measure where the ones from your previous block were located from a good reference point; pan rail and maybe oil filter plate.
Where they cross is your center point. Try to get as perfect as posible. You will have a little room too play with on the towers as well as the mounts them self's; but not much.
DO NOT DRILL ANY DEEPER THAN THE ORIGINAL HOLES; IN YOUR OLD BLOCK.
Start with a punch and then center drill that point. Use a small drill, to get a good starting point.(a drill will ALWAYS follow a previously drilled hole) then gradually work your way up to the minium pitch diameter of the bolt. (bottom of threads) I have the spec's.
If your drills are sharp, cast iron is easy too drill.
Start with a self centering tap, go slow 1/2 turn; DO NOT FORCE; ABOUT 15 FT. LBS. then back off too break the chip. Untill you bottom OUT the tap.
Repeat the tapping process with a bottoming tap (flat tip)
I have repaired/removed many holes/bolts as well as added needed holes in engines; water pumps, exaught bolts ect. using this method. Just do not rush, be sure of what you are doing. When you punch the center; if need be you can move it a little bit closer to center with the punch {light taps}
ESTABLISING CENTER IS THE MOST CRITICAL POINT when drilling and tapping any hole or broken bolt.
Second most important SHARP TOOLS.
Fatz, I wouldn't try drilling any new holes unless the lumps are on the block where the holes should be. I don't remember when the motor mounts changed. If it were me I would try to make some new mounts to use the blocks original holes with the frame perches that are in your truck. Can you weld up some mounts out of 1/4 plate ? Maybe you could ask the same question in '61 to '66 truck section and see if anyone there has already run into this. DF
I had the same problem putting a 60 T-bird engine in my 65 F100. Motor mounts chaned to 4 holes from 2 in 64 or65. also the big hole in the back of the intake manifold is for the road draft tube.. motor mounts from a car won't work.
my solution was to trace motor mount holes from a later block. Cut out 5/16 steel plate. drill holes from the trace. only tap the ones to use the truck motor mounts. bolt adapters to block(I had to cut a corner off to clear something on the block,don't remember what).Then notch motor mount to clear bolt head(from adapter).bolt on motor mount. open up slots in motor mount towers a little(3/16 or so) going up,now that the motor mounts are a little farther appart. motor only sits up less than 1/4 inch from stock. I had no probs hooking up my clutch or any thing else.
There are no bosses to drill where you need them ,so thats out of the question. I may have an extra set laying around,I think I made 2 sets.I'll look and check back later.
By the way I've had no problems whatsoever.
Thanks Everyone!!! Matt seems to have experienced the exact problem!!! There are no blocks on the block to drill it is a early cast but would have been worththe shot thanks Fatz
I found one side,Proabably used the other elsewhere. I could make you a set if you need them.Email me if you would like ,mpbarksdale(No Email Addresses In Posts!).
