I just got a new dell 1721 laptop. I also have a desktop computer. I have a cable modem which is ran into my desktop through a ethernet cable. When I remove the ethernet cable coming from the desktop and put it into my laptop i can not connect. It says the LAC has limited local access. Sometimes it will ask me for a user name and password from my ISP. I dont have one and my desktop has never asked for that. My buddy hooked is hp laptop to my cable once and it worked no problem. Is there something I am missing? I don't want a router or wireless router, I already have that at my other place. I just want to be able to unplug the ethernet cable from my desktop and put it in my laptop when I am using it. Any help would be great!

The easiest is to have a router, but if you do not want that then you need to power down the modem for about 2 minutes before connecting the PC..
I don't know what ISP you have ,but I know Comcast modems will only work with the PC that is connected to it previously.. You need to power it off so the memory gets dumped then it will connect with the new PC.
Another thing to check is to make sure your LAN connection on the new PC is not disabled.
If it is detecting the connection but only giving you limited local access it might just be the settings. Under the start menu go to "Network Connections" Find the pertinent connection and right click and select "properties". Then under "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" compare the settings to your buddy's computer. My guess is it will need to automatically obtain addresses etc, but if he has the same service as you do he might have the correct IP addresses and DNS etc typed in.
Thanks for the help guys! donjamer had it right. I was unplugging the modem to let it rebot and that was not working. But I forgot that the modem had a battery backup so that did not really turn it off. I had to hit a reset button in the back. Thanks for the help, that did it.

That's why it is better to get a cheap wired router.. You will not have to wait for the modem to reset..
They are only about $30.00 or less if you watch the sales..
