Either one will be OK. It's personal preference IMO. The 5 means the oil acts like 5 weight oil when cold so both will help with cold weather starting. I llike the 5w40. Just
Be sure it's diesel rated oil.

That is what I was thinking, move here and just stay home the 2-3 days of winter. Don't want to hear about the heat. Remember you don't have to shovel hot!

so I've been shopping around. and it seems that is I'm going to switch to syn. I should also put in a bypass filter while I'm at it..I've been thinking of going with the Amsoil filter and there 5w-40oil anyone heard any theing bad about this set up? any other recomendations ? I looked at the oil gaurd but it is slightly more exspensive and since I was thinking of going amsoil the whole way I thought I would use theirs. thanks for any thoughts J

Go with a bypass system. All are good. Your oil will be cleaner and last longer.
You will not regret the change this winter.
I have noticed that the winter startup is better with the 5/30 than 5/40.
As the oil is used and ages it beats itself thick. In other words a 30 can become a 40.
On a note the 40wt nets a very slight advantage in mpg.

Thanks for all the good info bill. why dose the 40wt get better MPG? I would think that the lighter 30 wt would. what buy pass sys do you run? J

Yep. Normally the 30wt would do better windage wise in the crankcase ect. The PSD also uses the oil to drive the injection system. A scanner has shown that the 40wt makes a slight bit more pressure across the RPM band than the 30wt. The higher pressure helps with timing and atomization of the fuel.
I use the amsoil bypass. (stand alone unit).
Dont like to name brands anymore when all are good. To many BS oil wars.

We have an over the road car carrier here. Its has a little over 1 million on it
(*** 14). Motor has never been opened. Runs great. Has had 5/30 oil in it for 90% of its life.
