hey guies....I am new to ford trucks and want to say i love it. this is my first post. i have a 97 f 250 extended cab. my so called concern is when the tranny shifts from 3th-4th it feels like it dosnt really shift. Its hard to explain so bear with me...It what happens is first to second shifts fine tachs out and everything same with second to third when it goes from third to fourth it will rev up in third then touch fourth and drop right to 5th. was wondering if this is normal or not? it jsut seems that it hits fourth very quickly and does not stay in there and tach out? any ideas
Is the trans slipping when it shifts past 4th?
Is the OD lite flashing in the end of the shift lever?
Watch the Tach when going through the gears. Each gear shift is a large differnece in RPM. The TC lock-up is only about 200 RPM and is very subtle. TC lock-up happens about the same speed 35-40 MPH.
If ou want to know what the TC lockup feels like, get the truck moving about 50 MPH, hold a steady throttle and touch the brakes, the RPM will rise a bit and then return.
I'm pretty sure it's normal.I think what you're feeng is shift into 3rd,then tc lock-up(soon after 3rd unless really pushing it),then going into 4th. Sound like that?
Welcome to FTE and Psd. Beware of PMS(powerstroke mod syndrome)
the clutch is what you feel disengaging when the rpm rises after hitting the brakes. the clutch gives better fuel economy by locking out the "stall" in the converter, gives you lower rpms at highway speeds then if it didnt have one on it
What you feel is fords crappy programming. Funny that this is what i have sent coonhunter pm's on.
What happens is when the trans shifts 4th gear (OD) the TC unlocks than it shifts (4) than unlocks the coast clutch than it locks the TC. Its gives you a bump shift or slipshift feeling.
As a test you can feel it. Turn the od off. Now drive to 50 mph and manually engauge the OD. It will be a perfict shift. When you manually engauge the OD it does not unlock/lock the TC. It will just shift and unlock the coast clutch.
Ford did this to divert line pressure for the shift so it completely engauges then sends the pressure back to the TC.
Some have installed a manual TC lock switch for this. But it will code and flash the lamp if shifted while the TC is locked.
The shiftpoint (4) $ucks. I for one would like to see a fix!!!
Its just more wear on the TC and heat generated due to it.
VB mods elevate the problem.
yup, we've had an in depth discussion on this one already via pm's, i beleive my shift kit gets rid of the crappy feel, watch the videos and decide yourselves, an ngs pid test will give me more data, just havent had time
Also the multiplication of the TC comes into play. Along with how hard its setup to hit.
For instance a PI TC drags the motor down like a gear change when it locks.
Coon
Thats what i trying to get at no matter what you do to the VB it will not fix this issue it elevates it. Its bad programming of the PCM and chip burners cannot overide it.
dirty diesel
Pull down your inspection cover. See if it has an oem TC in it.
