I read the TSB for noises related to loose heat shield in the exhaust system........basically just add a pair hose clamps around the main converter and the muffler..............my truck may have this problem..........at idle in fwd gear....with or without the a/c on ....sometimes I will get a "buzzing type of vibration".......it will stop if you move to neutral.....and it doesn't do it all the time in drive.........it always goes away as soon as you let go the brake and begin moving..........it may return when you stop at a traffic light....it does sound like it is an exhaust sheild problem........does any one ever experienced something simular ?
Thanks Steve...I hope that it is a shield...and not something like torque converter or tranny .....I'd be OK even if it were a motor mount that's sagging.........this weekend will tell.....
I have the ringing noise at about 700 rpm regardless if the truck is moving or not. I also have a vibration which sounds like the cats are vibrating/buzzing from the inside and it resonates all the way to the rear of the truck at times. The entire exhaust system shakes alot due to the low and sometimes rough idle of the V-6. This is only in drive and stoppd at idle. I had the cat heat shields welded but still, no change. I put a hammer between the muffler mount and the ground and the vibration stopped completely. Are these mounts bad or is it the cats? Looking to put a cat-back dual outlet muffler with left and right tailpipes exiting behind the rear tires. It's a 4.2 Any suggestions?.

Try looking from front to rear at the whole exhaust system mounting to make sure there is clearance from any metals or body parts. Sometimes heat shielding is pop-riveted or bolted to the floor over the exhaust and corrosion or loose fasteners will allow the shielding to drop onto or very close the exhaust. Some exhaust rubber mounts also have a steel guard covering them. I assume it's for heat reflection. I've seen some rust loose on some vehicles at work and they jam between the mount rubber and the piping or muffler causing a vibration.
The entire system wobbles since it is all rubber mounted but doesn't appear to make contact nywhere.. The vibration seems to be caused by a shaking of the engine. Makes me wonder if the engine mounts are bad and could be transmitting the vibration. It's almost like a resonance between the engine and the exhaust system.
I took the trck to the dealer. They replaced the harmonic balancer to try to stop the engine from vibrating and shaking the whole exhaust system. That didn't work. So they put in new motor mounts @ n/c. No change. Now they are sending all the info michigan to get advice on how to fix this. They are leaning towards installing a couple of dampers on the exhaust system to offset the vibration harmonics. Does anyone know if this works? And I planned on replacing the muffler with a SISO flowmaster 3 chamber 70 series. Nice rumbly muffler with no popping. I wonder if the damper system would still work on a different /new muffler? I wonder of the inside of the cat's have come loose and that is the issue. Thats under warranty. Still need answers.
