Trailer Light Problem with my '97 F150 4X4
Help! I own both a horse trailer and a camping trailer. With both trailers, when I plug them into the back of the truck, the right side brake light stays on. If I turn the truck off, the right side light stays on. When I try testing the right turn signal, it will blink intermittently. Not the steady blink-blink-blink that you would expect if it was working.
Do I have a short? Are my plug contacts dirty? Since both trailers have the same issue, I have to assume that the problem is with the truck. Thanks in advance.

Jim,
I agree that the problem is in the truck.
Some questions:
1. Can I assume the truck lights, signals, etc., work OK when not connected to a trailer?
2. Has this setup ever worked correctly, and if so, what has changed?
If the answer to both questions is "Yes", the truck wiring harness is wired incorrectly. The trailer light is connected to ground on one side, and is waiting for voltage to be applied to the other side to light up. Your truck is supplying 12 volts to this bulb all the time. Check to see that the pin that supplies voltage to the brake/tail lights is wired to the correct place, and of course, check for any damaged wires or bent pins.
Good Luck.
