O.K guys while changing my oil the other day, I decided to grab the front drive shaft and spin it... I noticed that both of my front axles where spinning? so i grabbed the drives side while spinning the drive shaft and it stopped, so i did the same to the passanger side and it stops while holding it and spinning the drive shaft but when i let go of the axle at the wheel it starts spinning again? only the passanger side is doing it? ive always had the hubs in auto? whats going on???
That is very normal. When you spin the driveshaft, it is telling you that the transfer case is not engaged, and since the axles spin freely, it is also letting you know that the hubs are free.
When you hold one axle, the other axle will spin as a natural design of the differential. This is actually telling you that the differential is operating well. Both sides ork this way, so this means everything is normal.
An open differntial is designed to send power to the wheel with the least resistance. Whenn resistance is equal, both axles spin. After you apply some resistance the other axle will spin indicating proper operation.
You should always verify the front end operation after 4wd use. This is one way to verify that the hubs have dis-engaged and the front end is free.
If a hub is stuck, it will not allow the axle to turn like it should after you have selected 2wd and turned the lockouts to auto.
Many guys never do this and drive around with the hubs still locked.
With the ESOF system, just because the lockout is pointed to auto, does not mean that the hubs are really free from the axle(s).
