front hub fix

so i need to service my front passenger side hub. i need to know what parts to get and where to get em. if i reach behiend the tire and grab the u-joint that enters the hub i can move the hub and axel shaft up and down quite a bit. like an inch or more. seems like the bearing inside the hub is shot. the tire dosent wobble just the hub. with the front end jacked up if i spin the passanger side tire with the hub unlocked the axel spins. spin the driver side and the axel dosent spin. so its deffently the hub. also where the axel shaft enters the axel housing going from the hub to the differental their is a dust seal or oil seal hanging on the axel and the axel shaft has alot of play as well. im guessing their is a bearing in their too that is wore out as well. what parts and special tools will i need to get her all fixed. anything helps. thanks

If 1 axle is turning only i think that is because it is an open differential. Put chalks behind your tires so the car cannot move and remove your tire. then try and move the hub assy up and down and see if the king pins look worn out or whether the hub only moves. You might have a combination of both going bad on you. Also if your wheel bearing is shot in the hub you should hear and feel a grinding sound almost like a skateboard on rough asphalt. Someone with more knowledge on this should be along shortly.

Here's how you pull the hub. Most likely you will need the entire assembly instead of just replacing the needle bearing. Make sure to have lots of PB Blaster to soak the nuts and bolts under there, mine were on pretty tight.

I bought the timken bearing from Autozone for the first bearing. The second I bought on ebay for about $160.

I did the job for the first time in about 5 hrs. Only working about 1 hr/day. Not that difficult a job. The only issue was installing the large seal on the spindle. Also pay attention to the washers under the nut for the hub removal. Don't put them in backwards. There are groves to allow vacuum to operate the hubs. Put in reverse you might not have 4wd.

Put your truck in four wheel drive and stick a screw driver in the u joint in front axle and jerk it around if you want to see how much play you have, check both sides. This is with truck in park.

If you buy the hub bearing (4wd) it will come with the needle bearing new installed. This is the only bearing you will need. The internal differential bearing will not normally need replacing as this would require total rebuild. There will be play in the shaft due to the splines that allow the play but the "chunk" bearing should still be ok. So all you need is a new hub with the new needle bearings installed. Watch the part you buy it should come with ABS sensor installed and a Yellow O-ring around the outer part of the hub. The parts list I posted actually cover what you need. Check it out.

Check Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto if you dont want to go OEM from Ford. Last time I checked they had decent prices. Just make sure you order the right one for 2 or 4 wheel ABS.

If you are getting noise out of the wheel while driving you are at risk of bearing failure. If the bearing fails totally the wheel could come off. This doesn't mean it will but it could. When I heard noise in mine I parked the truck until repaired. If forced to drive it I would not go far nor over 20 mph.

Check autozone for the Timken bearing they make good bearings.

Check this Item # on ebay. I bought one of these for my right front.

Item # 130300217096

Of course make sure you get the correct one for your application.

depending on your milage you may want to go ahead and do the ball joints. you are only 2 large nuts and one tie rod connection away from getting the nuckle off to replace the knuckle seal on the guzzie web site. i found a lot of stuff on the web to me understand how tackle this project.
