I presume my 94 Ranger has a GEM, does anyone know where it is? Is it next to the radio?
I picked up an Explorer overhead console and was planning on using John Griggs's how-to on CarDomain.
The console came with about 4 ft. of wiring harness and was also wondering if my harness is for the self dimming lights and mirror. About 3in. from plug is a green/orange wire sticking out of harness, and another green/orange wire covered by a sleeve with a round plug on the end about 2ft. from plug.
If this is what this is for can I hook it up to a 94 or will it only work on newer models?
I have read on here that John had a how-to about doing the lights and mirror on his site but it looks like he may have taken it off, I don't see it on there.
Anyone who has done the overhead console that has any more advice I welcome your input. Thank You.
I put an Explorer overhead console in my '04 Ranger using my usual method .... blunder forward. Hardest part was plunging that knife into my pristine headliner. Regarding the hole you cut; remember you can always enlarge the hole, but you can't make it smaller .... so take care. I used a cloths hanger to pull my wires to the left door pillar and put the sensor on left front near the headlight. As I recall (was a couple of years ago), I had to go through some ritual in a parking lot to get the compass working right. I wasn't satisfied with the way the color matched so I took the cover off and painted it ..... looks like it was installed at the factory. Good luck.
I am so proud of my OHC install I had to reply. Thanks to the John Grigggs detailed how-to and coaching from Rockledge, my install went smooth and the result looks and works great. Dono's comments are spot on.....the hardest part was putting the razor knife through the headliner, but once you do that you're committed and the instructions are so accurate and detailed you can't miss. Punching the wires through the firewall was the only difficult part and I used an opening with an empty plug grommet just below the throttle cable. The GEM on mine is located to the left of the radio. I cannot speak to the wiring match up to the '94. You can see my final results in my gallery.

Thank You for the replies. I think I have figured out what the extra green/orange wires are. I think they are for lights that go to vanity mirrors.
I may pull radio out this weekend to see if my GEM is beside it if I don't get any replies as to its whereabouts. Haynes maual is worthless for that kind of stuff.
Those two wires sticking out of the OHC harness are for power to the Explorer lighted sun visors.
Your '94 does not have a GEM. If you are trying to find the VSS signal wire (GY/BK) you can pick it up off the cruise control amplifier located behind the PS dash, just above the glove box (remove the glove box door to access).
Rockledge, after going back out to my truck I relized that that part looked familiar, I have one of those green box's from a dash that I had bought to replace my cracked dash in my 91. The green box has 2 plugs going into it, 1 gray and 1 white, they both have 6 wires going into them. Both plugs have a GY/BK wire but the gray plug the wire is the third wire from glove box door and the white plug the wire is second wire from firewall and appears to have a thinner black stripe. I have a feeling that the one I need is the 1 from the gray plug right?
Is that whole green box a cruise control amplifier?
Thank You Rockledge, Your help is much appreciated. I don't know what I would have done when if I would have pulled the radio to find no GEM. Maybe I will take pictures and post them when I'm done so that others with a pre '95 will have the added info needed to wire up their overhead consoles. Thanks again.
