I have a 97 F250 PowerStroke. When its cold it's fine but when I drive it a few miles and it gets warm it kills the engine when I put it in reverse. I can put it in neutral, restart it and again go to rev. and it goes, but it still pulls down the engine. Is my converter locking up? Thanks for any help. Rick
Thats weird my 95 F-150 did the same exact thing I rebuilt the tranny put a ART CARR torque converter in it and never could fix the problem I ended up just driving the truck like that until I sold it. I put about 20k on it and never had a problem other that when the tranny warmed up a let bit you had to throw it in reverse and not touch the brake or it would stall or want to stall does it hall a$$ in reverse thats one thing I notice about mine it would do like 30 MPH in reverse. does it lug the motor down in drive mine would lugg down until It got to about 1000 rpms then it would take off normally.
not exactly sure on that tranny, but can't you just unplug the tranny connection and try it out? Well, to eliminate and pcm/ecu issues? I think the ecu only controlls lockup and od on that tranny, right? An E4OD? Plug is on the passenger side near the dipstick, kinda a pain to get to with the heat shield intact but it's possible. It's got a funky little lack tab that has to be retracted before unplugging it.
If doing that makes it better, you can be fairly certian it's an electrical issue, not your tranny/tq converter taking a dump.

No, the ecu (PCM) controls ALL the shifting on an E4OD.
But having said that, the truck will still have reverse with the PCM disconnected from the transmission. It is a good way to check if the problem is inside or outside of the trans. Try it and post the results, then we can help diagnose what's wrong.
PS-Before trying this make sure the trans fluid is full. Check it with the trans warmed up and idling in park. Low trans fluid can make it lock, too.

Thanks Mark, You was dead on. The Tranny was 2 Quarts low on Fluid,It works perfect now. I should have checked that in the beginning, but I was thinking if it was low it would be slipping. Wrong again. Thanks guys for all your help. Rick
