on my '41 for some reason the passenger door opening handle on the inside has a tendency to fall forwards into locking position just by slamming the door.
If the drivers side has been locked before then I have a problem as I can't unlock it from the outside with the key.
Does anyone know the reason?
Oh btw, I the doors still miss the escutcheons as they where unavailable at my favorite supplier during the rebuild.
There is a spring on the inside door handle mechanism. This provide tension to keep the handle from flopping back and forth. You'll have to undo the 3 screws and then you can get to the spring. It's just a squiggly (for lack of better word) spring steel that often just snaps off with age. One of my '46s does the same thing.
You should take a look at my instructions on how to install this spring. It is in the Early Ford Truck Enthusiasts site. Look at: Remote Handle Spring Replacement 40-47 PU This details how I repaired mine without tearing the retainer apart. I don't know about Dennis Carpenter's product, but I do know Bob Drake sells them as remote handle springs.
