Every once in a while when I go to open my tailgate it is locked for no aparent reason any one else having this problem. Or know what the problem is. 03 crewcab XLT F350
No. But if you are over 44, my wife tells me that we can be very forgetful. Are you locking it and forgetting??? {:^)
Could be a very loose or broken lock cylinder. Can you move it without putting the key all the way in? In any event, get it replaced. If you are worried they will flash it, just take um the tailgate!!
I always try to keep mine locked since ford tailgates are so easy to take off. I think the lock is one of the best features on the new fords since they are not cheap to replace.
Lariat No not forgetting. No @!$% I can open my tail gate close it jump in my truck move it go to open the tailgate and it will be locked. Yes I am worried about them reflashing truck has 46000 miles on it and hasn,t missed a beat. I mean this truck is freaking awsome. Excepted for the tailgate thingy and that isn't really that big of a deal just more of a pain in the ars.
If you take it to the dealer, have them put it in writing that THEY WILL NOT flash the computer. I told them to put it in writing before I gave them the keys. A service agreement is a binding contract and if they break it they could probably be sued, am I right?
You are right that ford tailgates are too easy for someone else to take off.
To make it just a bit more difficult, one old tip is to just put a hose clamp around the pivot. At least then a thief will need a screwdriver and a little bit of time.
My truck's tailgate has a lock also, but the truck only came with ignition key. Do new trucks come with a separate tailgate key? How much to replace the lock and key at the stealership? Thanks,

Hey Coro,
That is a good idea! I will have to do that on my 1971 ford.
