4.0 SOHC chain rattle

Hi everyone, this is my first post here, need help with this problem, please guide me.

My 1998 exploter has the nice SOHC motor but broke the front chain tensioners once, I replaced them with the Kit that ford sells, this was two years ago, now that noise came back, it is really loud when I start the motor, then goes away when I rev it up, but sometimes I can hear it while cruising at low speeds, the other day the fuel pump's attendant almost poured diesel fuel in the tank mislead by the engine noise.

I remember seeing a chain kit that came with a restrictor to install in the oil gallery that is behind the torx plug next to the cahin tensioner, my kit didn't come with it, I guess it raises the oil pressure to increase the chain tension.

I was thinking what would happen if I remove the tensioner and enlarge the feed orifice to allow more oil in the tensioner and increase it's efficiency.

I'm using 20W50 oil, my engine has more than 100.000 miles on the clock and almost don't use any oil, I was adviced to use 5W30 but I'm afraid it'll start burning it.

please advice me what to do, I'm worried, the noise is getting louder.

thanks a lot.

Augusto.

Ford did modify the kit. Now it includes an oil restrictor. It prevents oil from draining out of the front cam timing chain tensioner when the engine is off. You need less oil flow when it is not running, not more oil flow while it is running. Use the correct Ford parts.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear, do you know if ford sells the restrictor alone? or do you happen to know the part number?

Thanks.

The part number for the front tensioner kit is YL2Z-9E473-AA, and it contains the tensioner, the intake gaskets, the oil check valve (looks like a jewellers screwdriver without a head) and a brass plug and gasket.
You can get it from http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...cfm?siteid=318 by doing a search on the part number.

The redesigned tensioner and the oill restrictor are the key to this fix - see Space Truckin's description in the other thread.

You shouldn't be using 20W50 oil in this engine, it's a close tolerance engine and 5W30 is recommended to get to everything that needs lubricating. You might be causing more wear with 20W50.

in the computer of my local ford dealer does not appear that part number, is it a ford or motorcraft number?

they carry a cassete kit with the oil restrictor included, also another kit wich has only the restrictor and a chain tensioner, this one runs for $96

any comments?

Timing chain rattle

I have a 2004 explorer with timing chain rattle. The left side tentioner keeps losing its prime. I have replaced it twice (yes I pumped it up) and is works fine but if you let the vehicle sit for a few hours the noise is back. When I remove it, it has lost it prime and needs pumped up again. I have replaced it twice with same results. I checked and it has the oil restricted in it. Any help would be appreciated
