I just registered here, and need help already.
I've got a '90E150, 4.9l auto. I can't get this thing running without using ether. Once I get it running, I have to hold my foot on it or it will stall. Once it warms up, the thing straightens out and will idle normally. The Air Intake control valve is good, as is the Throttle Position sensor, it's a new one. The coolant temp sensor is good. Has new battery as well.
Once I got it started, I disconnected the MAP, the engine started running rough initially, and then straightened out. Is this indicative of a bad MAP?
I've tried pulling codes and keep getting code 77, WOT not detected/operator error.
I've been told of an air temp sensor somewhere on the top of the throttle body, I sure can't find it.
ANY HELP will be appreciated.
Anyone willing to spend some time and walk me thru this? I think the only things left are the MAP and ECM.
coolant temp or cylinder head temp fits the bill. if they went open thats what it will do.
is it rich?
Yes, you can smell raw gas as it's cranking. I do have spark. I just went out and tried starting it with ether, no good.
Where is the sensor for head temp?
Thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm wondering as well, does it have one, that is. Someone else said to check the intake air temp sensor. I'd think it would be in the airbox, or maybe in the snorkle, but can't find that one either.I'm beginning to be reminded of why I haven't worked on these things very much since the days of carburetors!

I am not sure if I can help you, since yours is a 90, mine was a 95. Codes for "operator error" are not uncommon. Ford diagnostics are kinda back and forth, it means that you have to do some things during the test. For example, turn the wheels, or accelerate, or tap the brakes, whatever. "Operator Error" means you are doing something wrong or not doing something. You need to follow the Test procedure. WOT (Wide-open Throttle) Operator Error probably means you should have "pedal to the metal" during the test, but you didn't.
You did not mention if you did a tune-up. Did you?
Don't waste your time on checking single components. Run the diagnostics properly and let the computer tell you.
I sold it for $200, and I never did find the problem. The guy that bought it lives close by, and whenever he fixes it, I'll let you guys know what it was. I'm just a bit overwhelmed right now, and eliminating problem children.
