Okay, my engine was missing at either idle or 5,000 plus depending on my point adjustment. There were metal shavings inside my distributor so I said screw it and went out today and bought a new dizzy, cap and rotor. I put it in and it still misses. It idles like crap and it backfires when I hit the gas hard. I have the firing order correct. I had a post earlier about my balancer being slipped. This is not true because I checked it today with a coat hanger and "real" TDC is TDC on the balancer but it won't even try to run at 10BTDC. I checked the timing with the vaccum advance off because as soon as I hook it back up at idle it will advance the timing. It is hooked to the port by the metering block on the holley not the manifold. There are no vaccum leaks anywhere. I'm about to go pull the wires off one at a time to see if I have a wire problem but they are brand new MSD wires. I had been planning to go to the dragstrip all week but I guess that is just a joke at this point.
Just checked the wires. All wires made a difference when I pulled them off. The coil wire will send out about a 2" arc to the fenderwells. Pretty sure the spark is good. I also tried another new dizzy from a different parts store which I forgot to mention earlier. If my balancer isn't slipped them my total timing has been running about 55 degrees. How can there be no pingning? I can't believe this crap.
Just a comment though probably not related to your problem. In your first post you stated that your using the ported vacumm on the carb for advance. Also that you have it plugged at idle when checking/setting your timing as it effected your results. On my Holley this port does not have ANY vacumm at idle but as soon as I touch the pedal I get vacumm. I understood this to be correct. Maybe my carb is not acting right?.?. If you have vacumm at idle from this port, is that correct? I don't believe so but could be wrong.
Good luck and keep posting.

From what I hear the vaccum should be zero at idle. It may be that on my engine since it requires a little more fuel to idle than a stock one the vaccum is present because the butterfly is open a little farther. I dunno. I messed around with the points today and I got it to where It will run fine up until 5,100 and then it will backfire. I don't think the points start floating at this range. I have had it up to 6,000 with points before and it was fine. Pertronix is on the way. I needed a new dizzy anyway. The other on didn't hold the cap on even because there was some metal shavings coming off one side of the cap where the rotor would hit. Pertronix is on the way. POINTS SUCK!!!
Bought the ignitor II today from O'reilly. My buddy is a manager there and he got them to me for $89.99. Summit wants $109.99. Not bad on the price eh? They will be in wednesday. I can't wait. My missing problem seemed to get better today for some reason. It was almost like the new dizzy had to break in. Still get that miss every once in a while while cruising and at idle. 5500 rpm today with no popping. Nothing should hold me back from the strip next weekend. I hope I just didn't jinx myself. Got the new hardened rocker shafts & stands installed also.
Good going, buddy! Once you make the switch from points you'll never look back. Did you have the dual point set up? Probably not if it was stock. I don't think the single point set ups hold up well at higher rpms, and I'd bet you see an improvement with the Petronix. Go smoke 'em at the tracks next weekend!
I had the single points. There is a chevy truck running around down at the track that runs 13.1 consistently. I WILL BEAT HIM! Someday somehow. I have a 3.70 mini spool third member in my driveway to install. Very busy this week so it might have to be next week.
I just installed the ignitor II. It is sweet! The bottom end miss went away and I was able to retard my timing about 5 degrees and get better response than before. Pulled solid all the way to 6,000. It took about 5 minutes to install and I wasn't rushing. I didn't have to play with the adjustment either. I set the gap with the provided gapper and threw the cap on. I still need to set the timing with a light though. Hopefully it will get some of the carbon buildup out of the chambers from before. It would run real rich from missing when cold. I ran some water through the carb the other day and it spit quite a bit of carbon.
