302 timing

So I have been working on a 79 f150 which I put a fresh 302 with the gt40 heads and cam and all that good stuff. But being it's a 85 block and crank I had to use a harmonic balancer out of a 87 302 and matching flywheel due to needing the the 50 oz weight. The problem is that when the number one cylinder is on tdc and it shows the the balancer it's on tdc. When I start the truck it runs and idles good but with the timing light hooked up the marks on the balancer are still way off like can't even see them like 1/4 from the timing tab. Am I missing something can it even run decent with it being off that much??

Setting initial timing with a vacuum gauge instead of trying to use a light would be real slick here I'll bet.

I'm way too hazy to say anything intelligent on this, just some vague partial memory... but was there something about the timing pointer being different across some boundary? Like some year, or car versus truck, or maybe that was on the 429/460?
