Question Engine Oil Change

Question:

#1 Oil Filter: Which oil filers should I stay away from? Farm & Fleet has Mobil, Fram, and Perolator. Are any of these OK to use?

#2 Oil: Farm & Fleet will have a sale on Rotella-t 15w-40, about $47 a case and want to pick a couple of cases for next year oil changes when the Temps go back up. What other oil (Dino) is good to use. Since winter is coming, I want to go to 5w-??, what should I use? I change oil every 3k - 5k, and I am trying to save some $$ by doing it myself.

#3 Are there any additives used when doing an oil change? I thought Ford was adding something when they were doing my oil changes, but now to think about it, it was probably the radiator fluid additive (green fluid)

#4 Any pitfalls? Like making sure I have a bucket big enough to hold all the old oil, etc...

Thanks in advance..

Dave.

7.3 Oil Change:
http://www.FTEs diesel forums.com/fo...ead.php?t=3558

On the 7.3 Rotella is fine....6.0s are a little more picky. I switched everything over to Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 now.

I park the fleet for the winter.....but I've never had any issues running 15W-40 in my trucks, of course they both fit in my garage and I plug them in when cold. I may switch my 07 to the Valvoline Extreme Blue Syn. since I'll drive it all winter.

Thanks DCSpecial, good link.

Looking for a good winter blend, dino, that I could use. I believe the syn oil is a little too $$ for a short 3k - 5k duration.

How much is the Valvoline Premiun Blue? and do they have a winter blend? Just wondering.

Thanks

Dave.

The Premium Blue is $10.99? per gallon.

I took advantage of the Flying J special in March....buy one get one free.

Bought 18 cases (4 gallons per case)....since that's all they had, and I'm all out now

As far as I know, they only have the Premium Blue (dino) and Extreme Blue (syn).

Yep, it's Endorsed and Recommended by Cummins.

Price difference syn vs. dino is the same as everyone else I believe....you can find it online for $33 a gallon. The dino in stores is 10.99 a gallon. Some auto parts carry it....most can order it.

Advance Auto Parts has a 15 quart drain pan which you can seal up and put in the back of your truck to take to recycle station or whatever. It's been a while since I bought mine but I think it was about $15. It is very low profile, has a handle to drag it with, pour spout with cap, and open and close vent. Hope this helps it go easier!

Syn Rotella is $16 & change per gallon at Wally-World... Costs me about $75 per change with FL-1995 filter.

Oh, and yes you should pick up a new copper washer. And don't forget to pre-load the filter. It takes just under two quarts to fill it.

Skip the washer and buy a fumoto valve (spelling). A simple flick of a lever and out comes the oil.

I once had a steering dampener, until I started having problems trying to turn my wheels. Found the shock having big dents. Now what would happen if whatever hit my steering dampener hit the futomo valve? Could it leak, or even worse, break off? I'd rather have a little difficulty changing my oil now than to have been stuck on the side of the road waiting for a drain plug and 15 qts of oil.

I usually just unscrew off the drain plug, burn my hand with hot oil, drop the plug into the bucket (fish it out later). That's why I wait to have a brew while it is draining out, so that I can use it to cool off my burns.

Futomo valve looks good, but with my luck I'd rather pass on it for now.

Dave.

One more thing -- I found out that Wal-Mart "hides" their syn Rotella. It used to be on the shelf where the dino Rotella was, but they moved it to an end-cap (the ENTIRE end cap was syn Rotella, BTW!!). I was pissed when I found it yesterday. I bought dino Delo because when I asked the "helpful" person working there they said "If it's not there, we don't have any". That was after going to the second Wally World near my place. I should've looked better myself...

Anything is possible. I guess if you hit hard enough to break the valve, you may also hit hard enough to put a whole in the pan. Personally I've never had an issue with the valve.
