I just bought a '48 Ford F-1 last night after weeks of haggling with the owner, and sleepless nights thinking about flatheads. Anyways, it's got a near perfect cab, perfect frame, and a flat head V8 that purrs like a kitten. The fenders are pretty wasted, but the rest is pretty good. Bought from a farm from a gentleman whose uncle purchased it new. Gotta get some pics up, and I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of questions.
Congrads. Northwoods is right. We are lucky to find anything thats not totally rotted away here in the north east. I got lucky a year ago and found a reasonably sound 54 in East Hartland. I like the spring swap meet in Stafford. Good luck with your project.
Well, after toying around with it all weekend, I decided I'm going to keep it pretty close to original. Everything works, and the engine doesn't smoke a bit. It's also got a really nice grille guard that I'm not sure if the previous owners made, or it was a dealer installed piece, but it's got a giant 'F' in the middle of it. I might warm the flathead up to 3/4 race specs and put wide whites on it with chrome steelies. Too many possibilities right now to decide on.
Nice truck, those fenders look like keepers to me. Decent F-1 fenders are hard to find. I have repaired worse, check out the fenders I rebuilt for my F-4:
As for the grill guard, I don't have any official information about this particular grill guard but I have one I bought about 25 years ago and I am going to use it on my F-4. I think they must have been either an after market or a dealer installed item. I have seen quite a few on trucks on eBay and in a few on trucks in junk yards. I am thinking about cutting the funky "F" out and installing a blue Ford loge in it's place.
