and yet another question

Awhile back I was wondering how hard it would be to remove the ridge in the center of the hood on a 53-56. Would you need to install additional support under the hood or do you think that there would be enough of a crown in the hood to support itself. I have a few spare hoods that do need repair and would try it on one of them as I would hate to ruin the one good one that I have. Just wondered how you would go about doing this.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen this done, but you would have to cut out the ridge and weld a filler piece in. Need I remind you of warpage during welding?
With all your other questions it sounds like it's gonna be a super nice ride. Good luck.

I would say that definitely YES, you'll need to add a stiffener on the inside of the hood, if you remove the ridge. In fact, FF56 added some to his hood on either side of the ridge after we saw them on B/B Ford's truck at the Western Nats.

If you check one of the hoods and press on it half way up and half way between ridge and edge crown, you'll see some significant deflection even with the ridge stiffening it.

Good luck!

Hi Randy, which way would you think that the brace should run, in the same direction of the original ridge or from side to side some where near the middle or possibly both ways.

Hello to you also f100kid1936, I am awhere of warpage, I am dealing with an earlier screwup I did on my driver's side door when welding the lower door skin, I may need to get a oil company to sponser me seeing as I already have the oil can on the door. lol

The stiffener should run fore/aft in place of the ridge at the hood centerline (inside). The two additional stiffeners are fore/aft midspan between ridge and edge crown. They should be about 2/3 the length of the hood and centered on the span fore/aft. The stiffeners on B/B Ford's truck looked to be 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 angles (or hat sections if you can form them). The stiffeners are not flat, but have a shape to them.

Yeah, that oil can metal is a bear to work with and I'm not even a body man. But I have been beating on my ol' truck since 1976!
A couple of years ago I ran over a plastic wash bucket in mine and put a very nice crease in my right front fender! I thught those old trucks had tough metal in them. Who knew?
