AC Condensor Fan ?

Does anyone with a 53-56 F100 have a fan mounted on their AC condensor? I am wondering if there is enough clearance behind a 55 Grille to mount a fan to your condensor to help with cooling. My truck has a 302 EFI with an engine driven fan for the radiator. Thanks for any feedback. Donald

Up until a month ago, I had my external tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator along with an electric fan mounted in front of that. I had adequate room for both. You shouldn't need a big fan for your application, but then again I was running a 16" electric fan just for additional cooling for in traffic driving. Take a measurement between the back of your grille and the front of your radiator/condenser. You should have more than enough room. Summit has detailed specs on electric fan depths so you can choose the right one. In general, they aren't much over 3", sometimes less, depends on what size you go with.

tacson, your condenser needs to be mounted as close to the radiator as you can get it. Ive got mine to about 1/2". you need to remove your cross braces to do this, but as a word of caution you shoulda tie the two uprights of you radiator support together at the top,(i used allthread). that is to keep the support for your air deflectors and fenders aligned.

Or are you just trying something different? if so dis-regard above info.

Thank Brent and Wayne. I was thinking of going with a fan for the condensor to aid my ac system. I have been reading and researching a little and many of the aftermarket ac companies recommend a fan for the condensor. So Wayne the cross braces need to be removed? Thanks Donald

Donald, I was told by an unremembered source(oldtimers disease) that the closer I could get the condenser to the radiator the more efficient it would be. I think 1" or less was suggested by a vintage air tech. I am not positive of the source of my info. I can tell you that my a/c is working very good, and my engine has never overheated, but with prolonged stop and go traffic I get a little nervous when it hits 220 and shut the air down until I get moving again.

I am running without a shroud, mid fifty,s 4 core radiator, flex fan, and a 7 lb cap. I,m sure that when I get a decent shroud I won,t have any worries at all.

If you look in my "progress pics" album you can see the braces removed with the 1/4 20 allthread across the top of the rad. support. I just used a cutoff wheel on my grinder and cut them flush with air deflectors.

Thanks Wayne I just looked. I have a 55 but you know your door panels are the bomb! They rock! I like them.

Your condensor needs to be as far away from the radiator as possible!! All your condensor is doing is taking the hot air from the cab and cooling it off, if it's next to the radiator, it will "soak" up the heat from the radiator, and not be able to cool properly. My condensor is 3" from my radiator, and it blows about 30 degrees out of the vents. On long trip, it blows snow out of the vent, that, closest to the evap core. I have an engine driven fan and nothing else.I never could figure out why they made some radiators with the condensors mounted right to them so close. You need air flow to make it all work!

Airflow is towards the radiator so it doesn't really hurt if they are close. There isn't much conductance going on between them while driving. If the condensor is away from the radiator air will bypass the condensor (around the top, sides and bottom) unless very tightly sealed. As a practical matter it is easier to put the two up against each other than to try to maintain a tight seal all around, especially if they aren't exactly the same size. The whole system depends on use of a full fan shroud. This does more to improve cooling and A/C performance than any single other thing.

Truxx -- is your system R-12?

Truxx I,m sorry to disagree with you but you are the one that is WRONG. The condenser needs to be close to the radiator so the fan can pull air through both of them. I,ll compare air temp in cab with you any time

I recently bought a Vintage Air system for my '56. Living close to SA; I went directly to their facility ( and picked up everything -same day). I talked with the Technical Service Director and asked that very question about how far away should the Condensor be from the Radiator. He told me that they should be around 1/8" apart. He says that when they are more than maybe an inch apart that they cause turbulance in the air flow resulting in the radiator starving from inefficient air flow.

I only have a 16" efan on my dark-sider 4 core radiator and it isn't enough even when the condensor was not installed. I need a shroud and that is the key which will suck the air thru 100% of the radiator instead of maybe 50% where the efan is covering.
Ever notice that factory condensors are very close to the radiator?
Multi-Million dollar test facilities.
