What bugs me about this situation is that the Packers said they caught a Patriot's employee filming their signals last year, but nothing came of the incident. Furthermore, they said they caught the guy only because they had been on the lookout that game for suspicious characters due to warnings from other teams. Seems like everyone except the NFl brass knew what was going on at least since last year.
So nobody can complain about the Patriots and call them cheaters. They most likely broke the rules....but everyone does. It is part of the game. The local sports talk show read from a article in 2002 where Mike Shanahan admitted to have a professional lip reader who focused with binoculars on the defence signal caller they whole game and gave info to Shanahan. He stated that by halftime they would have the signs figured out. In some cases they had it figured out by the end of the first quarter.
Negative. Getting caught has nothing to do with it. Cheating is cheating...no matter the slant or spin.
The fact that others may do it... does not make it right. I certainly don't want my children or grand children learning the "they do it so it is OK" doctrine.
...As far as giving the Jets the win, DID YOU WATCH THE GAME? The Patriots just killed them. The stealing of a sign does not cause the Jets to miss tackles and blow coverages. ...
Yes I saw the game, but I disagree with your assessment of the situation. Missed tackles and blown coverage are exactly what happens when the other team knows what you’re going to do. On offence if you call a run vs. pass and they know it, big difference. On defense if you decide to blitz and they know it again that makes a big difference.
I can only assume that if they did it for one play that they did it for every one. How can that not directly affect the outcome of their games? I’m sure they assessed this data within minutes and had their signs figured by half way through a quarter. It’s one thing to look across the field and see an obvious sign, its quite another to database their signs and systematically manipulate the game based on it. BTW they were all warned about this. As for what should happen now, I think their cheating in that event, that day should disqualify them from a win, no matter how well they performed. A lost draft pick is a slap compared to the hit of taking a loss in a season game. Give them the loss.

My point is that all football guys this week, weather its a player or a coach has addressed this issue. Alexander from Seattle that the patriots seemed to know every play they ran when they faced them last year. Comments go on and on.
You would think that with the technology they would all have the radios in their helmets like some QBs do. Or go back to the every play substitution of players to send in a play or coverage. Anyway, everybody probably does it, and they got caught. I have lost some respect now just because they got caught.

All QB's have mics in their helmets. That is why you only hear of defensive signal stealing. The difficult thing is have one player on the defense that is on the field for every play to have a mic in his helmet.
You know what is stupid about this? The info on the tape was never used in that particular game. The camera was not a live feed. It was a tape to be reviewed for the next time they played to get what signs corresponded to what defense.
It is more arrogance than anything with Belicheck. I hate that he did this. I cant stand how the piling on from the rest of the league.
well just for the record when i was in the military, we were told if we werent cheating we werent trying. mind you cheating was not tolerated but we were always looking for an edge, an advantage. kill them before they kill you. but this is sports and sports is supposed to be about sportsmanship, yada yada. i have always hated the pats. no matter what my beloved steelers could do, who they could beat, the pats always had our number. so i dont feel bad about them getting caught. if you are not cheating you are not trying, and if you got caught you arent trying hard enough. A $500,000 personal fine, a $250,000 team fine and the loss of either one first round draft pick (if they make the playoffs) or a second and a third round if they make the playoffs. That's sending a message.
