HI,
I have an '05 Edge with the regular AM/FM/CD unit in it and I would like to replace the crappy oem speakers. I don't want to change the deck as I don't want to do anything to make it more attractive to thieves, and any of the amps I have found are way too big to easily hide in the cab. I have found these Pioneer speakers for a reasonable price and my question is: If I just leave the stock deck in and change my speakers to these will my stock deck have enough output to make them sound decent? I'm not looking for a concert hall here, I would just like to be able to actually hear the music.
I found that most Ford stock radios are crappy, including the speakers. Getting a good set of Pioneers all the way around will indeed make it sound a ton better. As most pioneers are at least 2 way-speakers. Where most factory stock systems use a one way speaker with a mostly useless paper whizzer tweeter. I notice the ones you are looking at have a dedicated two way speaker system. Should be a damn good upgrade for you. Have fun, and good luck.
I think those speakers will sound great. But be advised, for the best results get the speaker adapters. If you use the adapters, you will not have to damage your factory wiring, and you will have better results. They are cheap, and they make the install easier, since you can solder the connections first from a convenient location (as opposed to doing it while reaching across the dash while dripping hot solder on the vinyl.) I would get hose speakers, just double check the application guides on the website to make certain they fit your stock openings. Personally my speakers are Jenson, but I don't think there is a major difference and I don't know which is better. I know you can't go wrong with Pioneer.
I like the stock head unit as well, cause it has big buttons for us fat fingured people. I replaced my stock speakers with rockford fosgates and they sound great. The ranger cab is small and contained, doesn't really need an amp to get big sound. I deal with crutchfeild, they let you know what speakers will directly fit and what won't, they also have the factory hookup harness's for a clean installation. They are also well priced.
What is the highest watt speaker you can get with that stock radio?
Most of Ford's stock radio's use 4 ohm impedance speakers. Getting something different will make the radio go nuts. I would stick around speakers that are recommended no more than 50 watts or so. Anything more and the stereo just won't have the power to drive the speakers. It's like hooking a subwoofer up to your iPod directly, just ain't happenin'. :P
Any more than a 25, 50 watt at the most would be a waste. With the small x-cab of a ranger, my 50 watt rockfords will drive you out at high volume, even the stock ones would, but the fosgates have much more clairity in the different ranges, for that reason it's worth the upgrade, but sure didn't need anymore volume.
Thanks for all the information. I picked up two sets of the Pioneers yesterday. They are 4 ohm 30 watt 6x8's designed for fords and mazdas, so according to all the replies above they should work great and fit without any hassle. Now I just have to find the time to put them in.
It's great being able to get opinions and information from owners with experience in this stuff before spending the money. I have been a firm believer in something one of my flight instructors told me a long time ago. He said, "learn from the mistakes of others, you'll not live long enough to make them all yourself".
