I have a 1997 Ford Ranger Regular cab. I have a stock cd/am/fm cassette player. I have just upgraded the speakers with 4 225 watt 3 way speakers to eliminate the popping and other sounds from the stock speakers. I have a small budget so I only do a little at a time. I do want to keep my stock deck because its actually out of a 2002 F-150, but i took a wireharness and put it in my ranger. So now i want to know how i can get the full advantage out of the speakers. I read somewhere that the stock deck actually reduces the bass at higher volume levels. I am not out to blow ear drums but i do cruise with my windows down and the radio up, which calls for volume turned up. I dont want to take on anything to complicated or expensive, so i dont know if i need an amp, but i would want to some how use as much stock wires as i could.
like it or not
that stock head unit is going to be your weak point no matter what
you do
the only reasonable way to start improving upon what you have is a after market head unit
Best thing to do is get an aftermarket HU because right now, that is your weak point. The stock HU lowers bass as volume increases so it isn't as likely to blow the stock speakers, even if you have changed them out with aftermarket, the HU doesn't know that. If you replace the stock HU you should be very happy with it, because it will allow your sound to be more precise and you can change your EQ's a little more as well. Good luck.
for an aftermarket head unit---------->eBay. especially if you are on a budget. you can go to a sound shop, see which unit you like for the right price, then go to ebay and put in the model number. i bought a pioneer deh-p650 xm ready for $197 shipped to me in 2003. the same unit in a sound shop in town was $329.99 and on sale for $299.99. nearly all aftermarket head units now have a built in EQ with more functions than you can use. good luck. same for amps and speakers tool.
It sounds like your stock head unit has it's own dsp/eq that adjusts frequency response according to volume level. This is meant to ease the load on the stock speakers (which stink, especially at reproducing bass frequencies) when the driver gets a little crazy. You may want to wait for JL Audio's CleanSweep to arrive in stores. It allows any head unit (stock or otherwise) to send its complete "audio signal" to it and the unit equalizes the signal so it can be fed to an external amp or processor...which will allow you to add on to your system while keeping your stock deck (and avoiding it's auto-eq function...which will always be present [without a CleanSweep or a similar product], even if you change speakers).
Got to go with all the rest. I have been installing systems for 5 years, and you would be amazed at how much a difference a new HU will make. also if you want good clean bass yes you do need to get an amp with a built in crossover. In my opion JL audio is the best way to go for amps and subs. Eclipse for the HU. I also would replace the factory paper cone speakers in the door.
Good luck
