Been shopping around online for used SD F-250 and was wondering , isnt the XLT package suppose to have the chrome front grille? I've noticed now that some have chrome and some are painted. I thought the XL had the painted grille up front.
Also ,under a previous good maintenance program what kind of life would I expect from a 7.3L diesel ?
All XLT's after 2005 had a completely chrome grill, before 05 all they had was chrome around the out side edge the inside of the grill is grey. XL's are all grey as far as I know. I would expect 350,000+ out of a 7.3l, but many have more miles than that. The only other things usually noticed with a 7.3l is the transmissions are a little weak, but most last to the 175,000 mark before replacement. The only other thing is in 4x4's the front ball joints usually go out between 50,000-100,000, but after their replaced they usually don't go out again. Read around here and you'll learn a lot, I know I have. Also check out the 7.3l section down a little farther on the page. But other than what's noted above the 7.3L is probably the most reliable motor ford ever produced.
Ok thanks Bud . After I posted that I thought well maybe it was the Lariats that had the all chrome grille . I imagine u could fit a 05 chrome grille on a (99?) or 00-03 ???
I will do some studying in the 7.3L section , guess that engine keeps me in the mid 03 and down years . I know I have looked at a few 03's and some the 6.0L and some the 7.3L
well, all xl models have the matte grey grill. the xlt comes standard with the chrome grill, but if the sport package is ordered, then you get a body color painted grill, bumper and a few other things.

I would avoid the 6.0L in the early years if you wanted a 05-07 I'd say go for it but not the early ones to many problems, although there are a few guys who have lucked out in the early 6.0L. 7.3L were from 1999 to 03, make sure you get a late 99 7.3L id you get a 99, meaning build date after 1/99. As far as replacing the grill with and 05 grill there are many of them on ebay that are a direct bolt on.
The XLT with the Sport option has a body colored grill. (See pic below)
The normal XLT has the chrome (stainless?) grill and the XL has a black grill.
Yes, but in the years he's looking at the grill is only going to be chrome around the edge of the grill on the XLT, the center of the grill is still going to be grey.

Redford is spot on BUT there is hope for you if you want a Chrome grill and XLT package.
The 2008 F250 SD with XLT trim here is an with 'Off-Road' package, so i have chrome bits including grill and have chrome side steps too. i wanted off-road due to the way she is used PLUS i desired have the added protection parts inder the gas tank, tranny, etc.
From the window sticker, well, part of it (if this helps you):
