I am wanting to black out the chrome grille and also the chrome front bumper.
I got the grille covered, but was wondering of I could lightly sand the chrome bumper and then paint it with and etching primer first....... then regular primer....then paint?
That is what I would do. You want to sand it till the shine is gone, then hit it with some etching primer. You could put a coat of regular primer over that then hit it with paint. I don't know how durable it will be but I am thinking of doing the same to mine so post some pics when you do it.
Yeah..... gonna try and get this done before it turns cold (before hunting season). Just got a lot on my plate. Trying to finish my brothers rig...... finish my rig and do the stuff I need to to do to my 6.0
I will take pictures when I do the grill & front bumper black out.
Don't do it, it won't hold up. Remove the bumper, take it all apart, take it to a sandblasting place, and have the chrome removed. That or find a chrom shop with a tank big enough to have your bumper dipped to remove the chrome. If you do not remove the chrome, you are asking for trouble. Your choice is simple, do it once and do it right, or half *** it 4 times a year.
I did this very thing about 6 months ago (check the sig. pic.), and could not be happier. I removed the bumper, cleaned all the crap from the inside of it and removed the plastic trim pieces. I went to town on it with my angle grinder and an 80 grit pad and removed all the chrome, luckily i had no divets on the bumper. I then used Rust-oleum self etching primer (two good smooth coats), let it cure overnight, and then went over it with 2 coats of Rust-oleum Professional high performance enamel (semi gloss black 239107), didn't have to sand it at all. It has held up great, and looks a lot better than it did before, and it is durable as all hell.

Wash and wet-sand with 320. Apply two coats of etching primer, one coat of primer surfacer, lightly wet-sand with 400 or 600 to knock off the nibs, then shoot three topcoats. I use Krylon Satin Black 1613.

'bought the Duplicolor kit to black out my emblems. Worked really well but I recommend to stop spraying one coat before you think it needs another one... really easy to overdo and end up too black.

If money is no matter, then yes - that would be the best way to do it. For a budget rig, there is nothing wrong with proper preparation and using spray cans.
"Asking for trouble"? Puh-lease. You make it sound like it's life threatening... It's not like the OP is competing for the Ridler award.
