Engine number questions

Okay, a friend has a truck that we are trying to find out what engine it has in it. We can't find a number on the block and found this number on the heads between the center plugs: C8AEH Where might I find the block number and what are these heads?

Thanks in Advance!

Those heads are standard FE heads from a vehicle model year between 1968 and 1971. The block number is located on the passenger side an a little towards the front in the freeze plug area.

I believe you may have a service block. I would not however trust the VIN decoder. Any motor could hav ebeen put in there. The only sure fire way to know which engine you have is. Measure bore and stroke. If it turns out to be FE whaich those heads probably are then you can determine what you have and where you can go from there.

Dang, we were hoping to be able to tell what engine it was without tearing it apart. Oh well, thanks for the info.

Don't give up yet you can check the stroke With a dowel or other peice of something. Turn motor over by hand and mark the lowest mark and the highest mark. Measure and see what ya got. you most likley have a 360 which has a stroke of 3.5". If you get 3.784 or slightly over 3 3/4 " you have a 390. If it is nearly 4 inches you may have 428. I really doubt you have a 428.

The bores are another story. you will have to disassemble to find out what they are. Good luck

Scotty, are you talking about a dowel in the plug hole? We am trying to do this without yanking the heads.

Thanks

He is talking about removing the spark plug and putting the engine at TDC then stick a dowel down the hole and mark it. Rotate the engine to BDC and mark the dowel again. This will give you the stroke.

Engine number questions

The date castings are by the oil pan by the oil filter mount on the block. The date may help. (ex 3a12 is Jan 12 1963) .If the block has 28 dif on the right side it is a 428 block, but it may have a 390 or 360 crank inside. On most 428 blocks they will have a 428 cast in the center freeze plug hole. It is hard to find,I had to clean the rust off before I could see it.
