As AX pointed out, drums are fine. I can appreciate your son wanting the truck stock height, but theur is a huge difference between slammed and removing a few leaves from the axle.
I think pulling a few leaves and installing new spring liners would take some of the harsh bounce and "top-heavy sway" away, and make the truck handle and drive much better. Keep in mind, 50 yrs ago, trucks were work horses and drove and handled as such.
