These guys are great at diggin up info and they have the most knowledge of what it takes to make big hp#'s. CFM is what its all about. What flows the most but offers the most protection with out affecting flow. My turbo draws alot of air, we all know that. How much it draws is left to be figured out but I have BDP to consult about that. I am gonna give Tim's idea a shot, se if the diesel shop owner will bite. If my research only shows that a new intake gained me 5hp, well 5hp is 5hp. Gotta take hp were ever I can get it, especially come dyno day at BD Power

Cowboy Steve
All this discussion about CFM. Has anyone dyno'ed with a manometer and noted relative CFM between the filters?

I am sure it happened, but what was the result of Tenns test on the stock box. Did I miss that?

Why don’t they tune them to higher HP since that seems to be what everybody wants? Why did they make the Pinto and Mustang 2? I and many others have pondered on these questions for years without any resolution. Many have just decided that the designers and engineers either don’t care what we want, are on drugs, or both. As far as the filters go I believe that they are just incapable of thinking outside of the box (pun intended).
All manufactures have a tight rope walk to perform in how the engine package is completed. The probable reason they don't think "outside of the box" (good pun by the way) is they also are concerned with sound volumes (as another said was a reason for not going with an open filter) longevity(as you stated), engine bay room and catering to the average consumer who wouldn't want to sacrifice some of these attributes to be able to run chipped and produce more horsepower. I imagine big brother is breathing down their neck in reguards to emissions as well.

As far as what you said about 4" exhaust goes(though off topic) we had a 97 school bus with the T444E and it has 4" exhaust AND a bigger air filter which begs asking can we fit the air filter in our trucks? The air filter is a cylinder element filter in a housing plumbed to the outside and according to WIX # 42253 flows 800 CFM (sounds better than 6637 or many other filters...though I don't know how the case flows). This might be our solution to wanting a good breathing filter and the protection of a case! The only problem might be having to do cosmetic surgery to our engine bay or hiding the filter in a maniquin in the passenger seat.(puts a new meaning to "roll down the window, the dummy in the passenger seat needs more air")

I surmize that the reason for the better breathing on a medium duty truck is because of the higher RPMs(larger gears) and demand for a higher percentage of it's power in continuous duty would threaten higher EGTs.

Gene,
I'll throw the "medium duty" Air filter idea in your ball park. Do you think the filter and housing would be worth it? (how would the numbers munch out)

01FordCrew, Please do not take it personally if it takes awhile for Gene to answer your questions. We lost Gene to a Freightliner FL60 with a C7 CAT, He does pop in over here from time to time, but not nearly as frequently as he used to.

Now as for your question, If you do not want to mout an external canister filter onto your truck then look into the AFE BigBoost PG5 filter. (see my misc picture gallery) It is exactly the same dimensions as a 6637, but flows 800 CFM. It is a reusable, washable filter. Cost is about $90.

here are some pics

How do you post pictures in your message like Brandon or Gene? Mine asks for a URL and I'm not sure how to post a picture from my hard drive.

Yes, I've gotten several PMs in which it was clear that many on FTE don't know that I've been strokeless for some time now, but I think I just fixed that with my new Avatar and signature!

The most important thing is to get the cleanest and coolest air that you can. The CFM capability needs to be high enough to avoid excessive restriction at WOT, because that might collapse some filters and do expensive damage! However as I showed in the thread below, as long as the restriction is less than about 18" H2O, it has a negligible effect on performance. Just ask Tenn, he pins his restriction gauge, and still makes his personal best HP!

Look at the graph in the thread below, and see the blue curve, for example, which is the 5th from the bottom for a pressure ratio of 3.4, which is as hard as you can possibly push a stock turbo. Going from 0" restriction to 12" you lose 1 psi of max WOT boost, and you need more than 18" to lose the next 1 psi. Due to the fall off in volumetric efficiency near max boost, each 1 psi there is only worth 2 or 3 HP at WOT, and for most folks that's not worth tearing up the body work to install a massive filter, and you'd need that extra HP just to overcome the aerodynamic drag if you mounted a big one outside! BTW, I saw a filter at a truck parts store that I could barely lift!

The Effect Of Air Filter Restriction On Maximum Boost Pressure...

I figured someone was posting on this infamous thread just to pull my chain so I decided to check it out! I haven't seen you post for awhile, and was beginning to wonder what you were up to?

Remember the thread about what's more important, HP or TQ, and which one does a dyno measure? Well, I've been hanging out on TDG, and opinions there are split about 50/50! So, I've been working on a new analysis of dynos with a bunch of equations etc.. to explain how they work, and it turns out that a dyno doesn't measure either HP, like I'd claimed it did, or TQ, which I claimed it didn't! But I was mostly right about the HP, and have shown why it can't possibly measure RWTQ!

Well don't ask me, because I'm not allowed to post pics anymore, which is one of the reasons I'm not spending much time here!
