My Parts Numbers and illustration discs don't show any plastic insulator whatsoever.
In fact, item 3A525 is shown as a coupler with the rubber attached part.
I am sure Ford also figured out that a plastic rag-joint was not a good idea and discontinued the part long ago. I remember seeing a guy on ebay selling a NOS Ford plastic steering coupler for the F150 last year, but I did not want anything to do with it after mine fell apart when I went to remove it. I bought a rubber style rebuild kit and I rebuilt mine and I also added a ground wire to it, since the metal ground strap also fell apart when I took the old one apart.
Here is picture of the plastic style steering coupler before I removed it. Not a very good picture, because it is covered with dirt and grease. The white arrows are pointing to some large cracks in the plastic disc.
Dennis, from that exploaded diagram you really can't tell what material the coupler is made of. My old coupler looked just like the picture you posted earlier only it had a plastic disc where the rubber is on your coupler.
Dlobacz, (i havent been following this post, hope this has not been covered) have you put a test light on the horn wire to see if it gets power, and checked to make sure it has a good ground
Yup, that is what I was looking at...hope to get it cleaned off tomorrow to see what I have as far as the ground. Thanks for all the help on this 'way more difficult than it should be' problem.
