I've heard it's good to change those. My steering keeps geting better with every upgrade, but I'm not quite there yet. Polyurethane bushings are in -- what a difference! Sway bar is soon to be in as soon as I fabricate a plate for it.
How hard it the rag joint to put in? Do Ford dealers still stock those? I have a '72 F250 with PS, 360, and auto.
Funny how this came up; as I was contemplating changing mine on my '71 F-250 CS, with P/S. I bought a replacement from NAPA, but the original joint appears to be riveted (?) with the safety dowels facing up and only unbolts from the steering column.
Do I have to remove the column from the truck and grind these off?
What alternative do I have?
Erik, he joint should un bolt from the column (1/2 inch wrench X 2 bolts) The bottom slides off the gear splined shaft after loosening the collar. There is some grinding and re-fitting involved the first time you install one of those 10 dollar rag joints, next time it will be easier. Again, I recommend solving the problem once. Costs a few extra bucks but I never compromise on safety issues and I am picky! While you are there check the lower end of the steering shaft for play, if it wiggles around replace the lower bearing.
