Is it okay to mix a synthetic brake fluid with a non synthetic fluid?
I helped my nephew fix a brake problem and we tried to flush out all the old fluid with new. I thought about useing synthetic fluid but didn't know if you could mix it and not encounter problems later.
Really, you should not mix it, but if you did a complete flush, you should not have any problems unless the system is very old and worn. Synthetic will pass by worn seals, especially the seals in the antilock system. I had that happen in my VIC and could not figure out what was wrong. Even the stealership could not find this as it would not set a code. It antilock motor was bypassing very slow and it was causing the rear wheels to lock under a hard stop. Yes, I run the VIC. It is not Grandpa's car with a 4.6. The 373 (stroked 5.8) runs that big boat just fine.
The only true way to flush it is with a power flush. It takes a lot of time and a lot of fluid and you cannot really be sure that you got all of the old fluid out of the calipers and cylinders. I ended up doing a complete rebuild. I needed an excuse to upgrade the brakes anyway. Now it will set your eyeballs on the windshield if you jump on them.
I didn't use the synthetic. I've heard a lot of good things about synthetic oils but didn't know anything about brake fluid. I just stuck with the non synthetic brake fluid just to be on the safe side. Now I'm glad I did.
