I used colored saran wrap and wrapped it around the stock plastic piece. Cheap and works great (no problems). I learned the trick from my Dad who has done it is his cop cars for years. I used green since my truck is green. Everyone always ask where I got the cover from...
I went to an art supply store and bought a marker that is specifically made for writing on glass, and colored the glass green. There are colored lights out there (Autozone and Advance Auto had them) but I couldn't find them in the right size for my 99 F250. I haven't looked for them for my 07 yet so I am not sure if they make them for it. I would be a little leary of saran wrap getting too hot and burning. It shouldn't, but you never know. If I do it again and can't find the lights I will just buy another marker (I think it was like $5).
I saw all kinds of led setups but they have a different shape than the stock light. They look more bullet shaped. Is there some type of compatability chart. I am thinking that I need to replace the clear bulb with one of the same shape.
The Saran wrap is on the dome light not the spot lights. I had the same worry about that too. I have had the dome lights covered on all my trucks with saran wrap since my 1990 F150 - No Problems...

Looks like dome lights are 578 and 912's. The led replacement should fit the socket that the stock bulb was in.
I have taken the old Testor's rattle can model paint (Candy Apply Red) and used it to tint lenses. You might try getting a dome light lens out of a wrecked truck, give it a few light coats of paint on the inside and see if that doesn't give you the desired shade of red.
Works great for restoring old plastic tailight lenses. Just keep putting on coats until you get the desired shade of red.
I found it! Just went to Kragen and tried a set of Victor Auto Bulbs #211-2R. They have the bullet shaped ends. They work great! Just what I was looking for. No more being blinded while driving with the kids or wife turning on the map lights. If more light is needed than the red bulbs put out you can still manually turn on the white dome lights using the switch next to the headlights (This is also the control for the brightness of the dash lights). They run $2.99 a set and you will need two sets for front and the rear. Save the ones you replaced because they are the same size as the dome lights and will be handy spares.
