Question Exhaust question

I have a 2000 f-150 reg cab with a 4.6L and i want to make it really loud (exhaust) have any good ideas? Right now i have a 24" cherry bomb glasspack 2 1/2" inlet-2 1/4" outlet followed by a 2 1/4" Y-piece, then 2 1/4" dual pipes. IT'S NOT LOUD ENOUGH !!! I want it louder a lot louder someone help me out here. I'm out of ideas. I've tried a 2 1/2" flowmaster series 40, very nice sound but still not loud enough. Then just a plain 2 1/2" Dual exhaust no muffler. Like i said i'm out of ideas.

Run a big generator in the bed & hook up several huge Marshall or equivalent amps, 'fill' the cab with speakers, get a recorded loop of the Space Shuttle blasting off, close all windows tightly, turn the volume all the way up & hit play until your ear drums bleed! "LOUD ENOUGH"?

The infantile craving for "LOUD" seems to be a common thread on FTE & has been discussed repeatedly. Its easy enough to search out dozens of dubious recommendations & more than a few WTF's. Never forget that its basically only your vain ego that wants to hear your "loud (exhaust)" & most of your neighbors DO NOT want to hear your every coming & going. Also be forewarned that many towns enforce 'noise' ordinances, plenty of 'do gooders' w/cell phones enjoy reporting tag numbers & many LEOs get a kick out of stopping show offs.

The only solution I'd ever endorse has surprisingly remained absent in the small sample of posts on this topic I've read. Since I recommend strongly against tampering w/EPA required equipment & fully support laws against 'noise' I have not posted it myself. That has incurred the wrath of several members of the "LOUD" cult. Speaking of wrath, I once had a neighbor who had an obnoxiously "LOUD" jacked up truck, who drove it as if everybody wanted to hear it. He got pulled over for noise, ranted that some SOB had reported him, he gave police a valid excuse to stop him any time they liked, ultimately leading to getting stopped with open container, which lead to a breath test he failed & a 'full cavity search' impound of his truck. He had some speeding tickets, so his license was revoked. After his license was reinstated he defiantly continued to 'get on it' just to make noise. Ultimately, he discovered that a guy at the end of the road, where he of had to sit at stop sign rumbling & revving, before blasting off, hitting each gear on the main road, had indeed reported him, though only after the noise harrassment returned. He confronted the 'snitch' face to face & the ensuing conflict caused the fellow's wife to call the cops & he was arrested for assault & threatening. The judge was very sympathetic to the guy who'd be razed from deep sleep so many times.

For the sake of domestic tranquility I'll post my suggestion. Its a time honored, classic device called an exhaust cut out. Usually push/pull cable operated, these gated Y fittings get placed in the exhaust pipes ahead of mufflers and/or cats, providing the capability of switching from quiet, fully legal, regular exhaust system to total 'cut out' direct, straight pipes or auxillary 'shorty' mufflers. You can instantly switch from loud, out on the highway cruising, to hospital zone. Unfortunately most of the 'noise cult' seems to want to show off & inflict their neighbors with the racket.

The only way you are going to get these trucks loud is if you get rid of all FOUR cat-converters....

A talented modifier can install the exhaust cut outs I described ahead of cats allow all exhaust to be diverted very close to the motor. I saw an installation that had dual secondary 'straight' pipes connected to the cut outs directing exhaust to either side just ahead of the rear wheels. Some just point the cut out down & let'r rip.

I did not attempt to study & calculate every combination to design the easiest way to do this for any application & thought I'd covered all bases by saying "A talented modifier can". They can do most anything you're willing to pay for.

I did not discount the possibility that headers & alternative pipes/cats might be used. I did not exclude the possibility that such mods might require customized head pipes that may push the cats back to achieve the purpose. From previous posts I see $2000 "LOUD" exhaust kits being considered. I suspect a switchable 'cut out' system could be put together for dramatically less.

Anybody got any good stories about burning out valves by running unrestricted exhausts?

a "talented modifier" can do anything your right, for a price, evidence of that lies in the monster trucks you see on tv...doesnt mean its practical, cost effective, or feesable in the real world that most of us live in, and whats the point of saying that for the right price anything could be done thats not any kind of advice at all! how does that help anyone? lay off man relax have a beer or something! i didnt expect you to calculate and study every combination, didnt expect you to be a jerk about it either though... and fordkid, you might want to look at a spintech race series exhaust, i have a spintech sportsman split case and it sounds great, its loud enough for me, i have it literally right after the cats and it sounds great when you get on it, but i know that the racing mufflers from spintech are prety loud, maybe check them out

Ah! The fickle forum critics. Actually "I did not attempt to study & calculate" ANY specific application, merely tossed out the unaddressed potential of exhaust cut outs for others to consider & evaluate. I never limited the idea to positions ahead of cats (OEM or otherwise) either.

If you were to big of a "jerk" NOT to recognize that I recommend against excessively "LOUD" vehicles, you need to "relax" & stop drinking "beer or something". The original question seemed wide open to suggestions for modifications from the cylinder head exhaust ports on back. IMO its entirely up to the individual to decide if "its practical, cost effective, or feesable" for their unique applications.

As far as "how does that help anyone?" I'd already made that clear. The unique beauty of exhaust cut outs is that 'you can have your cake & eat it too' at the flip of a lever. Its the Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde thing, you can have both, a quiet legal exhaust, then from behind the wheel instantly switch to raucous, disturbing the peace, outlaw decibels & back at will.
