I bought a new parts washer from northern tool, its the type that can use solvent. what type and where do you buy it.northern has 5 gal of mineral spirits for 50.00, washer needs approx 20gal.
I've been running Simple Green since January, and have had no problems.
While it's a 20 gallon capacity, it will run just fine with less. I have four gallons of Simple Green and six gallons of water in mine, it's about due to be changed, but this is longer than I got with Naptha.
Also, my garage does not stink like solvent anymore, and I don't have to worry about a stray spark.
What ever kind of solvent you get be sure to pick something that you can get rid of when it gets nasty. Some solvents you have to pay to get rid of. As recommened I would go with Simple green but there are some other solvents that are out there that is easy to get rid of.
I use mineral spirits in mine, I just put 5 or 6 gal in. .
same here 40 gallon parts washer, with 20 gallons of mineral spirits, and 20 gallons of diesel fuel.
5 years in use now, and i have only lost about 3 gallons due to evaporation. i figure when it gets dirty enough, i will just filter it through coffee filters and either reuse it, or burn it in the space heater.
El Cheapo paint thinner when its on sale with two tanks, one to wash other to rinse. Can just get the white vapor to ignite from a coffe can heated by a propane torch. Safe enough test for me.
I have the Nothern Tool 20 gallon parts washer with their mineral spirits. Cleans well and doesn't smell. Since it's not mixed with water, it won't freeze in the winter. It used to be $22.00 for 5 gal. bucket. Now it over doubled.
I use the cheap washer, with about 8 gallons of mineral spirits. I found an "additive" at the NAPA store, it's by Gunk, called S-C Super Concentrate Degreaser. A gallon is added to 10 gallons of spirit, although I use 8. The only thing is ANY moisture at all will depreciate it. So keep water out of it, make sure your parts are dry before putting them in the washer. Works unbelievable, as well as any of the solvents I have used over the last 40 years, pre-environmental controls.
On the mineral spirits - it's just paint thinner. I keep an eye on the local Menards/Lowes/Depot adds - it occasional goes on sale for a really good price, and I stock up, when they do. Saves bunches.
